Position: 2026 Assistant Project Manager Higher Apprentice, Infrastructure Delivery

Overview

2026 Assistant Project Manager Higher Apprentice, Infrastructure Delivery, Bristol. The Assistant Project Manager Higher Apprentice role sits within National Grid’s Infrastructure Delivery () team, leading the execution of major energy projects across the UK, including building and upgrading substations and transmission lines to ensure electricity and gas are delivered safely and reliably.

By working with internal teams and external partners, you’ll help drive the UK’s energy transition, contributing to National Grid’s sustainability goals and the Great Grid Upgrade initiative which connects more renewable energy to homes and businesses across England and Wales.

Responsibilities
  • Support Project Planning & Coordination: assist in organising project activities, schedules, and resources to deliver projects on time and within budget.
  • Maintain Documentation & Communication: keep accurate project records and facilitate clear communication between internal teams, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Monitor Progress & Identify Risks: track milestones, flag potential delays or issues, and support risk management with mitigation strategies.
  • Assist with Budget & Reporting: help monitor project spending, prepare financial reports, and ensure budget compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct Site Visits & Quality Checks: participate in site inspections to review progress, ensure safety and quality standards, and engage with local stakeholders to gather feedback.
Location

This role is based in the Bristol office with flexible, hybrid working. Travel to site locations is required, including overnight stays away from home. Annually travel is expected to exceed 10,000 miles for business across England and Wales. The programme includes attendance at the National Grid Training Centre at Eakring, Newark. A role-related company car is provided (no cash alternative).

About You / Qualifications
  • Minimum of five GCSEs grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English and Maths.
  • Two A-Levels at grade C or above (one in Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Computing) OR BTEC National Certificate/Diploma Level 3 in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Computing, or Business at Merit or Distinction.
  • Full valid UK driving license at application.
  • Willingness to travel with frequent overnight stays in pre-booked accommodation.
  • No prior work experience required; the program provides training and development across project lifecycle.
