Job Overview

Registered Nurse – Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – North Bristol NHS Trust. The role involves providing direct patient care, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care for ICU patients in a high‑risk, high‑technology environment. Join a purpose‑built 48‑bed unit that is a leading trauma and specialist care centre.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care to ICU patients, responsible for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
  • Identify individual patient requirements and act effectively on changing needs, liaising with and directing relevant staff.
  • Organise time, equipment and staff to deliver safe and efficient patient care.
  • Give skilled support to medical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Administer drugs and treatments as prescribed in accordance with Trust Policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Demonstrate effective communication within departments and multidisciplinary team.
  • Advise patients, their carers and other staff on the promotion of health and prevention of illness.
  • Recognise situations that may be detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the individual and institute preventative measures.
  • Identify the priorities of care for patients, liaising with and directing relevant staff.
  • Deliver high standards of evidence‑based nursing care.
Qualifications – Essential
  • Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • At least 12 months recent, post‑registration experience in an acute general setting or ICU placement experience.
  • Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, including report writing and record keeping.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with patients and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Computer/IT skills and the ability to develop these in line with the needs of the service.
  • Develop a structured orientation and structured development pathway for both experienced nurses and those new to ICU.
Qualifications – Desirable
  • Teaching and assessing qualification or willingness to undertake such qualification.
  • Experience of working in an ICU setting.
  • Currently working in a critical care environment.
  • Teaching and assessing in practice or equivalent.
