Senior Estimator – Construction – Burlington, Ontario
A well-established and rapidly growing Design-Build construction firm, specializing in environmentally controlled facilities for the food and pharmaceutical sectors, is seeking a Senior Estimator to join its team in Burlington, Ontario.
Key Purpose The Senior Estimator is responsible for the timely and accurate preparation of construction estimates and budgets for projects of varying size and complexity. This role is instrumental in supporting the company's growth and maintaining its reputation for excellence. The successful candidate will be involved in conceptual estimating, tendering, vendor procurement, and managing pre-construction processes.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare estimates and budgets for Design-Build and Construction Management (CM) projects, including accompanying commentary, assumptions, and presentation materials.
  • Lead project pursuits: review RFP documents, prepare proposals and presentations, and participate in client meetings.
  • Manage procurement: develop subtrade prequalification lists, issue and analyze tender packages, and negotiate subtrade contracts.
  • Develop detailed scope of work and bid documents for subcontractors.
  • Coordinate project requirements with architects, engineers, consultants, and internal teams.
  • Conduct site visits and review design documentation for accuracy and integration across disciplines.
  • Communicate with vendors and subcontractors to solicit bids and assess compliance with requirements.
  • Maintain and update costing databases and participate in project risk identification and mitigation.
  • Incorporate project schedules and construction logistics into estimates.
  • Participate in post-project reviews to compare estimates to actual costs.
  • Required Skills & Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction estimating, preferably with a General Contractor (GC) or Design-Build firm.
  • Proven track record as lead estimator on successful project bids.
  • Experience with ICI (Industrial, Commercial, Institutional) construction, including ground-up builds.
  • Working knowledge of site development, building envelope, and M&E systems.
  • Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Plan Swift, Procore) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to estimate from both complete and conceptual project documentation.
  • Strong communication skills for working with clients, subtrades, consultants, and internal teams.
  • Able to manage multiple estimates of various sizes and complexities simultaneously.
  • Experience estimating projects ranging from $250,000 to $100 million.
  • Experience with cold storage and food processing facilities is considered an asset.
  • Understanding of various project delivery methods:
    Construction Management, Cost Plus, Stipulated Sum, and Design-Build.
  • Strong negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Diploma or Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Construction Management.
  • PQS / CEC designation or working toward it is considered an asset.
  • Gold Seal Certification is desirable but not mandatory.
