Senior Geochemist/Mine Water Quality Specialist

Stantec is seeking a Senior Environmental Geochemist / Mine Water Quality Specialist to join our Environmental Services team. The position can be located in Victoria, BC;
Sidney, BC;
Burnaby, BC;
Markham, ON; or Waterloo, ON with flexibility for other offices and relocation assistance available.

Your Opportunity

The ideal candidate will capitalize on existing client relationships to expand Stantec’s profile and market share in regional and national markets. The successful candidate will contribute to water quality and geochemistry field programs, environmental assessments, and environmental permitting activities for mining projects, among others.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program
  • Support geochemical and water quality components of projects including environmental assessments, models, and monitoring programs
  • Lead multi-discipline teams with water-related mining projects (geochemists, water quality specialists, hydro geologists, engineers)
  • Lead complex projects with initiative and independence across a broad knowledge base
  • Provide guidance to clients, project managers, and technical staff on mining-related water issues
  • Lead water quality and quantity model projects
  • Interpret and analyze data and provide technical support for water resource and environmental projects
  • Perform research related to technical issues or projects
  • Collaborate with other scientists and engineers on baseline and impact assessments, feasibility studies, groundwater/surface water assessments, contaminant investigations, and rehabilitation projects
  • Prepare technical reports and perform QA/QC of technical documents
  • Perform data analysis and data visualization using technical software
  • Conduct and support fieldwork as needed
  • Assist with proposal development and project task financial and schedule management
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Fluent understanding of Canadian and provincial water quality guidelines, legislation, licensing and permitting particularly relating to mining in BC, Ontario and Atlantic Canada
  • Willingness to travel to lead field crews, perform environmental monitoring, or participate in meetings with clients/regulators
  • Fundamental project-task management skills
  • Proven ability to analyze field and technical data, perform research, demonstrate technical knowledge, and solve problems
  • Strong organizational and communications skills (written, verbal, graphical)
  • Strong technical aptitude
  • Effective time management for varying priorities and deadlines
  • Solid computer skills including MS Office; knowledge of water chemistry and contaminant transport modeling software (e.g., Goldsim, PHREEQC, Minteq, MIN3P) and Excel is preferred
  • Experience preparing environmental assessments/impact statements and regulatory applications
Education and Experience
  • B.Sc. in Geochemistry, Hydrology, Hydrogeology, or Earth Sciences/Engineering with a focus in geochemistry; advanced degree may be preferred
  • Minimum 10+ years of relevant consulting experience in the mining sector (mine waste geochemistry assessment, water quality predictions/modeling, or related impacts); 15+ years preferred
  • Professional registration or eligibility (P.Geo. or P.Eng.)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Typical office environment; this role may involve fieldwork and travel as required.
