Max INC Rate: $123.78/hr

Max T4 Rate: $102.30/hr

Role Overview

The IP/MPLS Telecom E5 Engineer supports, designs, and delivers BC Hydro’s mission‑critical IP/MPLS telecom network infrastructure. The role focuses on ensuring reliable, deterministic performance through advanced IP/MPLS architecture, quality of service (QoS), and traffic engineering. This position supports major MPLS‑related capital projects as well as ongoing telecom operations, standards, and lifecycle initiatives.

The E5 Engineer applies advanced engineering judgment to medium‑to‑high complexity projects, delivering safe, high‑quality solutions within budget and schedule while working under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, configure, and support IP/MPLS networks for mission‑critical applications.
  • Develop and maintain IP/MPLS QoS and traffic engineering architectures using Diff Serv and RSVP‑TE.
  • Support major MPLS‑related capital projects and operational initiatives.
  • Perform network design, solution test planning, and execution.
  • Conduct new MPLS device introduction, verification, and lab testing.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Develop safe engineering solutions for medium to highly complex assignments.
  • Resolve complex and unusual design and field engineering challenges through independent analysis and judgment.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Contribute to BC Hydro engineering standards, practices, and future capability development.
  • Coordinate schedules, budgets, progress reporting, and contractor deliverables.
  • Define engineering scope, establish design criteria, approve technical documentation, and assess progress against standards, cost, quality, and schedule.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada, registered with EGBC or eligible for registration.
  • Minimum 10 years of telecom engineering experience, including at least 5 years in IP/MPLS QoS and traffic engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of IP/MPLS architectures, QoS mechanisms, and traffic engineering principles.
  • Familiarity with OT telecom systems and utility‑based telecom standards.
  • Experience with Nokia IP/MPLS platforms.
  • Nokia NRS II or Nokia Certified Service Routing Architect (SRA) certification.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in a professional environment.
  • Proficiency with standard engineering tools, CAD systems, and MS Office applications.
Additional Experience and Assets
  • Experience working in the electrical utility industry.
  • Experience leading or coordinating multi‑disciplinary engineering teams.
  • Hands‑on experience with telecom systems including fibre optic networks, microwave systems, power line carrier systems, remote telecom buildings, control room installations, battery banks, and generators.
  • Strong understanding of transmission systems, substations, protection, control, and telecom integration.
  • Working knowledge of project management principles.
  • Advanced networking certifications such as CCIE or JNCIE.
  • Cybersecurity certifications such as CISSP or ISA/IEC 62443.
Regulatory and Professional Requirements
  • Prior to commencement, the selected candidate must hold or have access to a valid Permit to Practice with Engineers & Geoscientists BC.
  • Engineering work will be completed under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Quality Management Pillar.
  • The engineer will apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice number to all sealed work.
  • All project documentation produced during the contract will be retained by BC Hydro in accordance with EGBC bylaws.
  • Use of BC Hydro’s Digital Sign and Seal Technology may be required.
