About the Role

Shift Engineers are essential to the operation and optimization of SFU’s District Energy System, chillers, cooling towers, and hydronic heating/cooling systems. They ensure daily compliance with Technical Safety BC regulations and support maintenance activities to uphold safety and performance standards.

This new Shift Engineer position will enhance team resiliency and coverage. The successful candidate will receive full training and primarily work dayshifts but will be rescheduled to cover for vacation periods within the rotating shift schedule.

The ideal candidate is someone who can think strategically and develop unique solutions to complex and interesting challenges. Someone who can work effectively as part of a greater team but also be highly self-motivated to support positive change. They are detail-oriented, safety-focused, and skilled in troubleshooting complex equipment. With strong communication and leadership abilities, they collaborate effectively across departments and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Their knowledge of Technical Safety BC regulations and commitment to compliance ensures the university’s infrastructure operates reliably and safely, supporting SFU’s academic and sustainability goals.

Qualifications

Class 3 Power Engineering Certificate and five years of related experience in areas such as fuel material handling, compressed air systems, water treatment systems, and controls, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Valid Power Engineer certification (e.g., 4th Class or higher).
  • In-depth knowledge of Technical Safety BC regulations.
  • Experience with boilers, pressure vessels, and HVAC systems, including chillers, cooling towers, and water treatment.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Commitment to safety, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience in institutional or campus environments (preferred).
  • Valid BC driver's license (Class
    5) and excellent computer skills required.
