Education Assistant III (Autism)
The Burnaby School District is seeking qualified Education Assistants III (Autism) for Regular, Temporary or On-Call positions.
Education Assistants III (Autism) are responsible for providing support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in and out of the classroom, and within the community.
- Assist in the planning, implementation and review of the student's Individual Education Plans (IEP), positive behavior support plan and safely plan.
- Reinforces the educational program by tutoring, adapting, or modifying classroom materials to meet the specialized needs of students with ASD.
- Provides personal care assistance, such as toileting, feeding, diapering, and dressing.
- Provides physical assistance, such as wheelchair maneuvering, positioning, lifting and transferring.
- Collects assessment data and utilizes data to document progress and for decision making regarding the goals and objectives in the student's IEP. Prepares written reports, communication logs and classroom materials.
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Completion of a one year minimum recognized program in special needs assistance plus one year relevant work experience plus 1000 hours in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) training documented by a Professional Consultant.
- Thorough knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and characteristics of effective interventions such as Applied Behaviour Analysis (Principles of Reinforcement, Discreet Trial Training, Task Analysis, natural environment teaching, incidental teaching and pivotal response training).
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children/students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
- Working knowledge of adaptive/assistive technology related to work performed.
- Thorough knowledge of safety procedures related to work performed.
- Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job.
- Ability to communicate effectively at the level required for the job.
- Working knowledge of computer operation.
- Demonstrated ability to work at the level of independence and with the degree of initiative appropriate to the position.
- Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) would be an asset.
Hourly Rate: $36.36 per hour.
