Brief Description

A Refinery Operator is responsible for monitoring, maintaining and running various machines and equipment used in the refinery process. The Refinery Operator is responsible for overseeing all work and machinery within their area of control. This role supports the Console Operator by reporting unit round readings, manipulating block valves, operating pumps, compressors, taking required samples and troubleshooting equipment during upset conditions.

The Refinery Operator is responsible for overseeing all work and machinery within their area of control. This role supports the Console Operator by reporting unit round readings, manipulating block valves, operating pumps, compressors, taking required samples and troubleshooting equipment during upset conditions.

This role also supports safe work by stewarding the permitting process, isolating process equipment for maintenance and participates in refinery safety programs.

Hourly Rate:$51.25 to $53.03 / hour

Hours of work:12 hour shifts (3 Days, 3 Off, 3 Nights, 3 Off)
OR 10-hour day Monday to Thursday

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and operate process units utilizing a wide range of control systems and equipment that includes tanks, vessels, columns, mixers, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, furnaces and vacuum systems.
  • Monitor process indicators, instruments, gauges, and meters to detect and report any possible problems
  • Make adjustments to process equipment to keep process parameters within acceptable ranges, including flows, temperatures, and pressures.
  • Ensure rotating equipment is well lubricated and oil bulbs/sight glasses are within acceptable limits
  • Operation of manual and automatic valves, meters, pumps and transfer systems that move product between tanks and process units
  • Complete handheld rounds once a shift, making adjustments to variables in alarm, and pass on any items that cannot be rectified to Head Operator and put in a work request if necessary.
  • Perform unit rounds at minimum four times a shift observing the process environment and looking for any leaks, abnormal noises or unsafe working conditions.
  • Manually gauge tank/vessel levels and maintain gauge documentation
  • Enters work order with adequate detail and priority for safety/equipment deficiencies and takes appropriate corrective or mitigating action
  • Relay critical information to Head Operator and Shift Supervisor about issues in process units
  • Communicates clearly with the Console Operator prior to making adjustments to process equipment
  • Collect samples and send to laboratory to identify product quality issues
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Shift Supervisor
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with Company housekeeping procedures
  • Identifies and responds to abnormal events in a timely and controlled manner.
  • Ensure that on-coming personnel are aware of actions and activities taken on your shift through the Shift Turnover process.
  • Ability to safely isolate equipment for maintenance activities and prove zero energy using the lock out tag out process.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Valid Third Class Power Engineering Certificate.
  • Valid Driver’s license is a minimum requirement.
  • Prior experience as an Operator is preferred.
  • Ability to lift fifty (50) pounds and climb vertical heights up to 200 feet.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and wear self-contained breathing apparatus.
  • Ability to participate in an emergency response and handle 2½” fire hose.
  • Able to work a twelve (12) rotating shift schedule, holidays and overtime.
