Much of our direct animal welfare work is carried out through our branches. These separately registered charities across England and Wales are run by volunteers who are unstinting in their work for animal welfare.

Many of the dogs in our care have never experienced life in a loving, family home. Our volunteer kennels assistants play a vital role in giving dogs all the care they need whilst they wait for someone to give them a forever home.

Many of the dogs in our care have never experienced life in a loving, family home. Whilst waiting for someone to give them a forever home, animals get all the care they need in one of our animal centres, and our volunteer kennels assistants play a vital part in this under the direction of our branch team.

• Preparing and providing food and water for the dogs in the kennels as directed
• Cleaning, disinfecting and maintaining kennels to the required standards
• Attending to the exercise and coat care/grooming needs of the dogs.
• Following health and safety procedures
• Liaising with colleagues

• Knowledge of dogs and ability to read their behaviour.
• Must feel comfortable around dogs and a patient and understanding nature.
• Able to carry out physical tasks.
• Able to work within a team but also capable of working with minimal supervision.

Before you can start volunteering you'll need to complete our simple online Health & Safety course and any associated training required for your role. Tetanus is a life threatening bacterial disease caused by an infection in an open wound. All volunteers must be suitably protected. We recommend that volunteers check their vaccination history with their GP. If a volunteer has not had the required doses, the GP should offer them free of charge as part of the UK vaccination schedule.
