Reporting to the Estimating Manager, the Estimator (Transmission) will be responsible for accurately estimating the cost of labour, equipment, and materials for supply and installation, as well as the direction, preparation, and documentation of work completion estimates for Transmission construction projects.
What You’ll Do Here- Shared accountability for the overall financial performance of projects awarded.
- Analyze documents, specifications, proposals, addendums in preparation for pricing.
- Perform estimate-related oral and/or written communications with clients.
- Review project sites prior to price preparation.
- Collaborate effectively with Operations, PMO, and Owners staff as appropriate.
- Obtain input from Operations staff as appropriate.
- Perform quantity take-off from construction drawings where applicable.
- Obtain pricing from suppliers/subcontractors and incorporate into estimate.
- Formulate all costs for tender submission – labour, equipment, material, rentals, and subcontracts.
- Accountable for accuracy and completeness of tender submissions.
- Oversee the distribution of appropriate documentation upon award of project.
- Manage scope change pricing as required.
- Maintain files and correspondence on active and completed projects.
- Provide technical support to field staff as appropriate.
- Drive estimating process/procedure compliance and consistency.
- Conduct bid handover meetings as required.
- Assist with prequalification, RFQs, and RFIs as required.
- Incorporate/comply with Aecon’s risk management policies and procedures.
- Drive positive relationships with clients, consultants, and key subcontractors.
- Protect all proprietary information.
- Maintain estimating data systems to ensure they are kept up to date.
- Assist in the training of new estimating staff as appropriate.
- Perform repetitive movement (data entry).
- Able to perform in a fast-paced environment.
- Drive an inclusive culture, promoting equity, welcoming different perspectives, and enabling career progression.
- Diploma/Degree – Civil / Construction / Electrical / Business.
- Minimum 7‑10 years of estimating/operational experience in Transmission Hydro Infrastructure.
- Understanding of affiliated electrical systems is an asset.
- Construction site experience considered an asset.
- Skills allow working independently with little supervision.
- Prior operational experience is an asset.
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings and contract documents.
- Thorough knowledge of contract language, terms and conditions, bonding, etc.
- Thorough knowledge of associated trades labour agreements and working rules.
- Good knowledge of job cost fundamentals and accounting/reporting.
- Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills.
- Strong computer skills – MS Excel, Word, Project, and estimating software.
- Strong communication skills – oral and written.
- Ability to work accurately and effectively under pressure.
- Adaptable to flexible work schedules when required to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work with others as a team.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as required.
- Professional designation an asset (P.Eng., C.E.T., CTech).
