Forensic Engineer, Materials Failure

Purpose

The Forensic Engineer – Materials Failure will report directly to the Senior Vice President and Practice Lead of the Product and Materials Failure Group. The successful candidate will collaborate with other experts to consult with clients; perform site examinations, testing, and analysis; and prepare professional engineering reports and findings in a clear and concise manner.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical expertise within the Materials Failure Group’s investigations, projects, and tasks, including the development and implementation of desk studies and field investigations.
  • Collaborate with other groups on multidisciplinary projects to provide clients with solutions to complex losses and failures.
  • Perform site examinations relating to losses or failures at residential, commercial, industrial, and construction facilities.
  • Conduct failure analysis on a variety of materials—metals, plastics, and composites—including fractography, materials characterization, and materials testing.
  • Test and assess the operation of systems and equipment both on-site and in our in‑house laboratory.
  • Review plans, specifications, and instructions to determine compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Assist in preparing engineering drawings, models, and simulations from field measurements, sketches, calculations, and data.
  • Clearly communicate investigation findings to clients, colleagues, and stakeholders, including in boardrooms, mediations, and court proceedings.
  • Prepare high‑quality technical reports based on thorough investigation and sound engineering principles.
  • Manage projects through the full lifecycle—from scope development to delivery—ensuring quality, timeliness, and adherence to budget.
  • Participate in client‑facing and business development activities such as industry presentations, seminars, and technical publications.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the firm’s Strategic Plan and core values.
  • Perform additional duties as required.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree in Materials, Metallurgical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • years of engineering experience, ideally within a consulting or forensic investigation environment.
  • Experience in the oil and gas sector is considered a strong asset.
  • Exposure to power generation or energy‑related projects would be an advantage.
  • Experience performing investigations and failure analysis in a forensic engineering capacity is highly desirable.
  • license (or eligibility for registration) with APEGA is required; licensure with EGBC is considered an asset.
  • Strong background in fractography, materials characterization, and materials testing.
  • Proven experience working on construction sites or within industrial settings.
  • Excellent technical writing and analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information clearly to clients and non‑technical audiences.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
