Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the talented team at the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS). As a Student, Geophysics, you will collaborate with an experienced team of geophysicists and hydro geologists to process, interpret, and integrate newly acquired towed transient electromagnetic (tTEM) datasets with existing geological, hydrogeological, and surficial geology information as part of the Southern Alberta Groundwater Evaluation (SAGE) project.

In this initiative, AGS is partnering with the Government of Alberta to conduct hydrogeological characterization, geological mapping and modeling of Neogene–Quaternary sediments and Cretaceous bedrock, and regional electromagnetic geophysical surveys to improve understanding of groundwater availability and connected surface water resources.

What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Perform quality control and interpretation of tTEM and airborne electromagnetic datasets, including noise assessment, gate editing, inversion parameter setup, and evaluation of inversion results.
  • Generate geophysical attributes and subsurface property layers (e.g., conductivity depth transforms, resistivity models, constrained inversions, stacked sections) to support geological and hydrogeological modeling.
  • Integrate tTEM interpretations with borehole litho- and geophysical logs, surficial geology, soils data, and other geophysical datasets.
  • Assist in collecting data for subsurface and hydrogeological characterization of shallow subsurface units, providing field support to AGS staff as required.
  • Contribute to map and figure production using ArcGIS Pro or similar platforms.
  • Support the development and refinement of 3D geological models by incorporating tTEM resistivity models, borehole data, surficial geology mapping, and structural surfaces.
What we’re looking for in you:
  • Currently enrolled in the third year or higher of Bachelor’s program in Geophysics, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with electromagnetic (EM) or near-surface geophysical methods, including familiarity with geophysical inversion workflows and the ability to generate and evaluate model outputs.
  • Experience working with geophysical, geomodelling, and/or statistical software tools is an asset.
  • Highly motivated and able to work independently.
Additional Information
  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post‑secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co‑op program will be a condition of hire.
