The Mustard Seed is seeking a compassionate candidate with the clinical expertise to support individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, and substance use disorders.
The Mustard Seed Pathways to Integration Program aims to support recently incarcerated adults struggling with substance use and addiction in their transition back into the community. The program emphasizes recovery, stability, and overall wellness by building recovery capital and providing critical pre-release and post-release services. The Pathways to Integration Program collaborates with Calgary’s Remand Centers and Female Annex.
Reporting to the Reintegration Supervisor, The Reintegration Social Worker is a member of The Pathway’s to Reintegration Program whose role is to support incarcerated individuals’ transition to healthy lifestyles in the community. The Reintegration Social Worker utilizes clinical skills to support individuals who experience poverty, homelessness, and substance use disorders. This position will focus on addressing mental health needs through individual case management.
They will provide assessment, counselling, and referrals to meet the needs of their clients. They will work in collaboration with outside community agencies and respond to emergency situations as needed.
Employment Type: Full-Time, Fixed Term (April 2025 to March 2028)
Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

- Provide assessment of clients’ mental health and substance use needs, followed by referrals to receive diagnosis and treatment.
- Administer direct client care in relation to substance use disorders and mental health.
- Offer supportive counselling related to mental health and substance use disorders.
- Empower clients to maximize the use of all available community supports.
- Conduct ongoing assessment and supportive counselling to clients as needed.
- Facilitate group intervention to address substance use disorders and mental health using DBT and other methodologies.
- Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive case management to clients as needed.
- Document client interactions, client referrals and client progress on documentation platforms (platforms vary with each city).
- Perform emergency interventions, as needed.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships within The Mustard Seed and with external agencies.
- Build a comprehensive library & knowledge-base on community resources related to substance dependency.
- Track statistics and prepare reports, as required.
- Assist the Reintegration Supervisor and the Health and Wellness Manager with new initiatives or projects as required.
- Support in training new social workers and providing mentorship as it aligns to the Health and Wellness policies as well as the college’s standards of practice.
- Assist the Reintegration Supervisor in administrative duties.
- A passion to be part of ending homelessness in Alberta.
- Bachelors Degree in Social Work.
- Registered and in good standing with the Alberta College of Social Work (or the ability to become registered).
- Minimum two years’ experience working in Mental Health is an asset.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and incarcerated individuals an asset.
- Proven record of mental health assessment, counseling, and ability to implement a plan of care.
- Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with clients; members of the multidisciplinary team, and community agencies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Calgary/Edmonton’s community (mental) health and addiction resources, and adept in navigating those systems.
- Knowledge of FOIP/HIA and ability to observe confidentiality standards.
- A self-starter with the ability to work in a cross-functional team & accomplish goals.
- Experience with Homeless Management Information System (HMIS/ETO).
