Advanced commercial litigator with thorough corporate commercial understanding (with a minimum of 5-10 years of quality experience)
TOM Capital Management Inc. is looking for legal counsel in Calgary. TOM is a well-funded investment business with a hands‑on, long‑term hold approach. What You’ll Do
Manage commercial litigation (60‑70% of role) while gaining deep exposure to corporate commercial work across TOM’s diversified investment portfolio. This isn’t traditional in‑house work, you’ll be counsel to multiple businesses, making real impact on investment outcomes while building serious litigation expertise. You will have access to expert guidance, as required.
You will be involved in complex commercial disputes from strategy through resolution – everything from contract disputes to employment matters, union arbitrations, regulatory matters and tax litigation. Beyond the courtroom, you’ll provide corporate commercial support on transactions, governance, and operational issues across TOM’s portfolio companies. You’ll also assist on legal operations improvements, implementing tech solutions, optimizing workflows, and leveraging research tools to enhance our team’s effectiveness.
TOM Works Differently
Work across multiple industries and a wide array of transactions. While time is loosely tracked for appropriate billing to the different investee companies, there is no billable hour pressure.
Develop both forest‑view business judgment and trees‑level legal precision. Small team means real influence and direct access to decision‑makers.
Optional fitness program with professional trainer 3x weekly (surprisingly good stress relief and networking).
Typically working out of our Downtown/Beltline office.
What We’re Looking For
At least 5‑10 years of commercial litigation experience with demonstrated ability to manage complex caseloads independently.
Corporate commercial exposure (M&A, governance, regulatory) preferred but we’ll develop this if you bring the right litigation foundation.
Interest in legal operations and technology – experience with legal tech tools, process improvement, or workflow optimization is a significant plus.
You’re a practical problem solver who thinks strategically about risk, communicates clearly with business teams, and isn’t afraid of technology. Law Society of Alberta member in good standing (or eligible for admission). Like our investment philosophy, we’re building for the long term – looking for someone who wants to grow with us.
