Position: Legal Counsel (12-Month Limited Term)

The Law Society of Alberta (“Law Society”) regulates the legal profession in the public interest.

In alignment with the Law Society’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the Counsel department is committed to promoting and enforcing a high standard of professional conduct and ensures that lawyers in Alberta practice in accordance with the , the , and the .

As a key member of the Counsel department and on behalf of the Law Society, Legal Counsel will be actively engaged on all steps taken throughout the professional disciplinary process including appeals and various internal hearings. Legal Counsel will be responsible for a wide range of legal work including legal research, drafting legal documents and all aspects of hearing preparation. The successful candidate should also have comfort and willingness to assist more senior counsel at various disciplinary hearings.

The Counsel department actively supports the Law Society’s mission to be a model regulator, including protecting the public interest and preserving the fundamental principles of justice.

Success in this position requires excellent research, writing, communication, analytical, organizational, judgment, and time management skills.

Key Responsibilities

As Legal Counsel, you will:

  • Conduct detailed legal research and identify applicable statutes, judicial decisions, and codes.
  • Draft legal documents including statements of admissions, briefs and memorandums
  • Assist in hearing preparations including witness preparations, assembly of hearing materials and managing Counsel’s disclosure obligations
  • Act on behalf of the Law Society in hearings and appeals
  • Appear at all levels of court and work with professionals to provide legal and strategic expertise to all Law Society departments and other committees.
  • Provide expert and strategic legal advice to managers and stakeholders.
  • Anticipate issues and assess risk strategically.
  • Proactively identify solutions to eliminate or mitigate risks and base decision making processes on ethics and integrity.
  • Manage various projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ensure legal objectives are met.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Qualifications

  • Law degree and call to the Bar, required.
  • Member of, or eligible for membership with, the Law Society of Alberta, required.
  • 3+ years of practice experience, ideally with an emphasis on administrative law, litigation, prosecution and/or risk management.
  • Broad legal knowledge including an understanding of administrative law principles, litigation and the Rules of Court, and basic understanding of core general practice areas including family, real estate, wills, etc.
  • Demonstrated advanced written and oral communication skills with the ability to work effectively as part of a dynamic team.
  • Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives.
  • High degree of professional ethics and integrity.
  • Highly organized, able to prioritize and change focus effortlessly as need arises.
  • Excellent judgment and analytical skills.
  • Interested in and capable of growing to meet additional changes and challenges that may be added to this position over time.
