Regulatory Economics and Competition Policy Research Fellow, Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts
The Department of Economics in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for two research fellows in regulatory economics and competition policy. The research fellows will participate in the new Research Program in Regulation and Competition Policy (RPCR). They will research and provide commentary on regulatory decisions, competition law cases and enforcement actions, regulatory and competition policy issues, and relevant policy or legislative consultations.
In addition to producing research commentaries and briefs, they will contribute to, develop, and define relevant focus areas.
Area: Regulatory economics and competition policy
Duration: 3 years
Start Date: July 1, 2026 (may commence earlier)
Salary: $65,000 to $80,000 per year
Responsibilities:
- Research and provide commentary on regulatory decisions, competition law cases and enforcement actions, and related policy issues.
- Produce research commentaries, briefs, and other scholarly outputs.
- Contribute to the development of new focus areas within the RPCR.
- Collaborate with faculty scholars in industrial organization.
Qualifications:
- Recent doctorate in economics with demonstrated research excellence in industrial organization, or a recent master’s in economics with relevant applied economic analysis experience.
- Strong communication skills.
- Passionate about the economic foundations of competition policy and regulatory economics.
- Entrepreneurial self‑starter and problem‑solver.
Additional Information:
The terms and conditions of employment depend on the educational attainment of the applicant. Doctoral candidates will be hired as Postdoctoral Fellows under the UCalgary and PDAC Collective Agreement; master’s candidates will be hired as research staff under the UCalgary and AUPE Collective Agreement. Salary for master’s candidates is $65,000 per annum plus benefits. Salary for Ph.D. candidates is $80,000 per annum plus Alberta Blue Cross health insurance benefits.
