This is a rewarding role for anyone looking to join Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service. You don’t need to have any previous firefighting experience – just the passion to protect and help your community.
Firefighting ExperienceOn‑Call Firefighters have everyday lives and jobs until the alerter sounds and they become professional Firefighters, responding to a range of operational incidents when required. Being a Firefighter is not just about fighting fires. An important part of today's service is fire and road safety prevention, education and safeguarding. When an emergency does occur, our Firefighters are fully trained and equipped to deal with a range of emergencies.
On‑Call Firefighters make up approximately 90% of emergency cover in the UK, which makes them an invaluable part of our society.
Below is a table of the levels of contract that the service offer. These are weekly contracted hours and will be discussed in more detail with the station management team at the initial interview.
- 45 31-60
- 75 61-90
- 120+ 120
- Be available to respond to or live or work no more than five minutes from your nearest station
- Be at least 18‑years‑old at the start of employment, but you can apply before then. There is no maximum age limit for applications.
- Have no unspent criminal convictions at the time you start employment. Unspent criminal convictions at the time of application can be discussed at the first contact meeting
- Have the right to work in the UK
- Be able to drive at the start of employment. You can apply before you have a licence
- Have good eyesight so that you meet the visual standards
- Have a good level of strength and fitness – you will need to be able to reach level 8.8 on the bleep test.
- Have a good grasp of Maths and English. You do not need any formal qualifications to apply but you will undertake the NFCC Written tests, which will test both of these subjects.
This position will be subject to a standard criminal record disclosure check.
