Associate Technical Director – Stream Lead, GIS Data and Visualisation
Arcadis is looking for a technical & commercial leader to join our Geospatial, Data and Visualisation (GDV) stream in the UK Environmental Planning business. The role will focus on GIS leadership within our Landscape, Master planning and Urbanism (LMU) team, growing the team’s capability, shaping geospatial strategy, mentoring colleagues, and driving new initiatives that deliver real‑world impact.
Role descriptionThe role is technical lead for Geospatial, Data and Visualisation within the LMU team, with the aim of growing the team’s capability and presence. You will help shape and deliver our geospatial strategy, define best practices, mentor colleagues, lead new initiatives and directly contribute to our global success.
You will act as a technical and commercial manager, providing leadership and support across the team, liaising with Arcadis’ global GIS user community and serving as a point of contact for new opportunities. The role requires a track record of business development and converting opportunities into project work.
The primary focus will be GIS: deep knowledge of GIS technologies, data capture, processing, management and map production. Data and visualisation aspects will strengthen 3D modelling and high‑end rendered imagery while advancing knowledge in real‑time development, digital innovation and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Responsibilities- Lead the delivery of GDV projects and the team, ensuring client satisfaction, effective project management and good communication and collaboration.
- Coordinate work for GDV staff based in the UK and overseas.
- Build strong relationships with internal and external clients.
- Provide GIS technical mentorship to GIS staff, including team leaders and principal and senior‑grade staff.
- Supply specialised GIS technical input to major/complex studies.
- Stay current with geospatial and AI industry trends and technologies.
- Prepare, check and approve technical reports, drawings and data platforms.
- Undertake presentations on GIS, Data and Visualisation.
- Manage GDV project budgets and work with the GDV team to deliver deliverables to tight deadlines.
- Quality‑control GIS and Visualisation work undertaken by other GDV staff.
- Share ideas and innovations to contribute to technical development of the GDV team.
- Travel to other offices for business development and project meetings.
- Encourage SHEQ feedback and lead solving SHEQ issues.
- Line‑manage GDV team staff and manage performance of team members and subcontractors, identifying and resolving any issues.
- A relevant degree in GIS, computer sciences, geography or other relevant subject, with advanced knowledge of GIS software or work experience and qualifications reflecting a similar level of expertise.
- Experience with ESRI stack, particularly ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise.
- Experience with Enterprise Geodatabases, databases and SQL for handling large datasets.
- AI literacy, with the ability to communicate concepts clearly and support skill development.
- Suitability for security clearance.
- Previous GIS / Geospatial project management experience.
- Excellent people‑management and pastoral skills and experience of leading and managing large diverse teams to deliver successful outcomes for clients.
- Ability to work within commercial constraints to provide output on budget and programme.
- Excellent technical knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise at version 10.5 and above; experience of ESRI ArcGIS Pro.
- Knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes and data formats and an understanding of how these support the delivery of engineering and environmental design.
- Experience of preparing Geospatial technical written content.
- Experience of promoting Geospatial via presentations and networking.
- Customer‑focused approach to quality and service.
- Ability to identify innovative solutions to problems and act on these to add value to clients and develop the Geospatial business.
