Position: Senior Planner / Associate

The Cardiff Planning Team has an exciting new opportunity for a RTPI or IEMA qualified Senior Planner or Associate to join its busy and growing team. The team’s reach is particularly diverse, with a strong pipeline of projects for a wide variety of clients, acting UK-wide – spanning developers, investors, major corporates / owner occupiers, energy developers, land owning charities and education organisations.

Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience in planning for energy and infrastructure projects, and carrying out / co‑ordinating EIA, to help resource a number of new projects, in Wales, for renewable energy development.

Key Responsibilities

This role is targeted at candidates with an interest in broadening their experience of planning and being closely involved with interesting projects and clients, notably (but not exclusively) in the energy and infrastructure sector.

  • MRTPI and / or PIEMA, ideally with at least 2‑3 years post‑qualification experience.
  • Knowledge of EIA process, with experience of preparing and co‑ordinating ES.
  • An enjoyment of writing, with excellent language skills and ability to effectively communicate planning arguments.
  • A proven ability to multi‑task, across many projects, helping to steer the team’s workload, managing projects capably – and reporting to directors, associate directors and associates in this team.
  • A willingness and enthusiasm for mentoring and guiding junior planning and graduate level colleagues.
  • Typically, your role will involve managing your own workload, assisting the senior team fee earners, undertaking planning research and enquiries, drafting and finessing reports and planning submissions (site assessments, policy notes, applications, appeals, development plan representations and so on). Assisting with the management of the team’s caseload and its business development activities.
Key Skills
  • MRTPI or PIEMA (with relevant planning experience, ideally including energy and infrastructure projects)
  • Detailed knowledge of the UK town planning and governmental systems, ideally including infrastructure consenting regimes i.e. DNS
  • Detailed knowledge of EIA, and experience of inputting into and co‑ordinating ESs
  • Strong verbal, numerical and report writing skills
  • Excellent organisational skills – prioritising and working to deadlines.
  • A “can do”, hands‑on team player.
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills, including experience of managing multi‑disciplinary project teams.
  • Self‑motivated and proactive.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Teams and Excel.

The Savills Planning Team in Cardiff consists of 12 planners and is a highly respected in South Wales and is an integral part of the biggest planning consultancy in the UK with over 240 planning specialists covering every land use sector and geographical area in the UK. Savills planning division has secured the number one position in Planning magazine’s Annual Consultancy Survey as the largest planning consultancy in the UK, for the 6th consecutive year.

The team is client focused so acts for clients throughout the UK proving a healthy blend of local, regional and national schemes. Examples of current projects include Glan Llyn and Coed Darcy (for St Modwen Developments) and numerous other residential and mixed use schemes, several wind farm proposals, the promotion of land in most of the M4 authorities, Cardiff International Sports Village, Wylfa replacement nuclear power station, preparation of planning applications for data centre developers, a significant commercial scheme in Bristol City Centre, new and redeveloped sports stadia (including the Kop Stand for Wrexham FC), work for the Mid Wales Growth Deal, support to SSE on the roll out of EV charging points – to name just a few.

There has been significant growth in energy and infrastructure projects, including a number of wind farm proposals, which required additional expertise and resource which we anticipate to be fulfilled by the creation of this new role in the team.

The Planning team is part of the largest property services firm in Wales and works seamlessly with colleagues in Development, Economics, Commercial Investment, Office Agency, New Homes, Energy & Sustainability and Property Management.
