The Technical Manager is responsible for maintaining, developing and implementing food safety, authenticity, legality and product quality. They are responsible for developing the food safety quality management system, monitoring and reporting on the performance of quality management system. The Technical Manager will develop, maintain and adhere to BRCGS, Customer Requirements (including retailer Codes of Practice) and other relevant standards to ensure both legal and customer requirements.
They will drive continuous improvement, root cause analysis and preventative actions.
* To develop and maintain the department Food Safety and Quality Management Systems (QMS) in line with business and customer needs, considering the stakeholder’s input to enable proactive management and compliance of the QMS across the site with product safety, authenticity legality and quality at the foremost.
* To maintain an effective traceability system across site. To ensure the site’s QMS can ensure all raw materials and primary packaging can be traced from suppliers through all stages of processing and dispatch to its customers and vice versa.
* To lead and develop the HACCP team. Drive continuous improvement in the HACCP system, undertaking training, monitoring, verification and validation.
* To prepare and review vulnerability assessments for all raw materials
* To develop and maintain systems to protect products, premises and brands from malicious actions.
* Develop and drive the department technical / quality agenda regarding short-, medium- and long-term plans.
* To be part of the sites Incident Management team. To ensure systems are in place to manage incidents effectively and enable a recall of products should this be required.
* To define, develop and maintain a positive Food Safety Culture. To work with the senior management team to ensure an action plan is in place and regularly reviewed.
* To develop, manage and maintain a system for the management of allergenic materials.
* Present and lead food safety and quality visits including BRCGS Audits, customer audits (retail) and visits from stakeholder including EHO, Trading Standards etc. To manage and complete all non-conformances / feedback requirements following visits.
* To develop and maintain an effective supplier approval and monitoring system to ensure that all potential risk from raw materials and packaging are understood and managed.
* To ensure the site has an effective system to ensure any out of specification product is effectively managed to prevent unauthorised use.
* To develop, maintain and validate housekeeping and cleaning systems (including Cleaning Instruction Cards and Schedules) to support production / hygiene team maintain hygiene standards.
* Where required, to support the review of product labels to ensure they comply with appropriate legal requirements.
* To maintain product test schedules.
* To ensure the site runs an effective quantity control system which conforms to legal requirements.
* To develop and maintain a system to ensure all measuring equipment is sufficiently accurate and reliable
Person Specification:
Relevant qualification to degree level (or equivalent) in a food or science-related discipline.
HACCP qualification (ideally Level
4).
Internal auditing qualification
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a quality, food technology, or technical role within a food manufacturing environment.
Experience leading or contributing to a HACCP team.
Proven experience of internal and external audits, including BRCGS and customer audits.
Experience managing corrective and preventative actions, investigations, and traceability systems.
Detailed understanding and proven capability in HACCP, BRCGS standards, Food Safety Culture, GMP, and Root Cause Analysis.
Strong knowledge of food safety legislation and quality management systems.
