Applications are welcomed for a consultant post in Otolaryngology at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC). The successful applicant will join a team of dedicated ENT surgeons working to provide excellent patient care. Areas of special interest will be welcomed, particularly head & neck & otology.
On‑call duties 1 in 5; attendance at monthly ENT meetings, including governance, morbidity and mortality, and education, is expected.
This is a replacement post following the planned retirement of a senior surgeon.
Main duties of the jobThe successful candidate will join a team of five surgeons, mainly based at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, with sessions at other units (Whitehaven, Workington, Penrith). On‑call duties are at Cumberland Infirmary.
The team is well‑motivated and cohesive, with a well‑developed TNO service and recent introduction of transnasal laryngeal biopsies in OPD. The programme of support for each doctor will be flexible based on individual needs and experience.
There is a strong emphasis on training: the Trust has received national awards for excellence in training and offers robust support, mentorship, and development for all staff, with regular multidisciplinary meetings.
Our location provides services not normally found in hospitals of our size, including major head & neck cases and free‑flap surgery.

Job responsibilitiesKey responsibilities include:
- Performing elective and emergency ENT surgery, with special interest in head & neck and otology.
- Managing surgical and clinical workload, including training and mentorship.
- Participating in governance, audit, and clinical governance activities.
- Engaging in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via relevant CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), relevant CESR or European Community Rights
- Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
- Evidence of competency in emergency and elective cases
- Advanced training in specialist aspects of Otorhinolaryngology
- High level of clinical experience and competence in Otolaryngology
- Completed Higher Specialist Training (CCT) in Otolaryngology or evidence of equivalent competency. Special interest to complement existing post holders.
- Commitment to teaching
- Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers, and staff
- Independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Interest in developing links with Primary Care
- Experience working in a District General hospital
- Advanced fellowship (or equivalent) in a subspeciality
- Experience of, and commitment to, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
- Understanding of training pathway in Otolaryngology including ISCP
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
- Teaching of non‑medical health professionals
- Educational qualification
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the Otolaryngology service
- Ability to organise and manage own workload efficiently
- Experience of audit management
- Experience and commitment to medical audit
- Experience of research and clinical governance
