Job Summary
Band 6 Cardiology Specialist Nurse 22.5hrs a week available - Permanent
The Cardiology Nurse Specialist will form part of a cross‑site team created to enhance the care of patients with newly diagnosed or chronic heart failure and patients with cardiovascular conditions.
Also provide expert nursing care for patients with ischaemic, congenital and valvular heart disease undergoing potentially high risk invasive and non‑invasive procedures.
Responsibilities- Contributing towards the management and development of both the inpatient and outpatient heart failure/cardiovascular nursing services in north Cumbria.
- Reducing unnecessary hospital admissions and re‑admissions by contributing to timely and appropriate assessment and management of newly diagnosed and chronic heart failure patients and patients with cardiovascular conditions.
- Managing an individual patient case‑load and advocating seamless care for patients with heart failure across north Cumbria in both the hospital and community setting.
- Contributing towards the delivery of speciality specific education and training for patients, their carers, healthcare trainees, and all members of the MDT across primary and secondary care.
- Participating in data collection for the national heart failure audit and any other relevant local, national or international audits or registries.
- Provision and delivery of expert nursing care for patients with acute and chronic heart disease undergoing high risk invasive/non‑invasive investigations.
- Working across our two hospital sites in Carlisle and Whitehaven, managing an individual patient case‑load and advocating seamless care for cardiac patients, contributing to timely and appropriate assessment and management of newly diagnosed and chronic cardiac patients.
- Providing nursing care for patients with acute and chronic heart disease to improve patient flow in line with current NICE recommended guidelines for Heart Failure, including an in‑reach service to ward areas and clinics in an outpatient setting.
- Registered nurse.
- NST 307 or equivalent.
- Further relevant development to postgraduate certificate or equivalent.
- Specialist Heart Failure course or willingness to undertake.
- Northumbria Advanced Clinical Assessment for Nurses (NACAN) or equivalent, or willingness to undertake.
- Immediate life support.
- ENB 124 / 931 or equivalent.
- Further relevant development to postgraduate diploma or equivalent.
- Extended skills e.g. IV additives/infusions, cannulation.
- Continuing professional development with portfolio.
- Cardiac Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.
- Drug therapies used in Heart Failure.
- NMC code of professional conduct.
- Equality issues.
- Substantial post‑registration experience within Cardiology.
- Experience of audit and evaluation.
- Leadership.
- Counselling skills.
- Able to work unsupervised within the MDT.
- Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise confidently and effectively with other disciplines.
- Auscultation of heart and lung sounds or willingness to learn.
- ECG interpretation.
- Experience of audit evaluation.
- The ability to be a good listener.
- Ability to motivate staff, patients and carers.
- Ability to promote service development.
- Ability to demonstrate the compassionate values and behaviours needed for dignified care.
- Leadership skills.
- IT skills.
- Flexible approach to working patterns.
- Able to work across hospital sites in the Trust.
