Ambulance Care Assistant (Bank) - Mental Health

This position is a bank (0 hour) contract based in Carlisle. We’re seeking enthusiastic, care‑focused individuals with a passion for helping others. Your main responsibility will be supporting the police and other professionals with transporting service users to and from healthcare facilities. This can be carried out alone or as part of a team.

You will need a full UK driving licence and will receive full training for this rewarding role.

Main Duties
  • Work as part of a team to support the patient on board.
  • Ensure the vehicle is safely and responsibly driven.
  • Assist service users with challenging behaviour and/or mental health illnesses, including those who may require physical intervention.
  • Transport vulnerable service users between hospitals, homes, prisons, A&E, out‑patients, and hospital wards.
  • Liaise with hospital staff and the police on the safe conveyance of the service user to and from places of safety.
  • Lift, secure, and help service users in and out of the ambulance.
  • Hand over service users to appropriate staff at treatment centres or hospitals.
  • Transfer service users from beds to stretchers, chairs to chairs, or similar both in and out of hospital and medical/commercial flights.
  • Ensure the ambulance is kept safe, clean, and tidy.
Successful Candidates
  • Full manual UK driving licence.
  • Committed to patient care and able to build rapport with patients.
  • Effective communicator with experience handling emotional and difficult circumstances.
  • A calm, considerate, careful driver with no more than six penalty points on your licence.
  • A natural flair for team working and collaboration.
  • Physically fit for patient handling, moving, and occasional restraint when required.
  • Able to problem‑solve and identify key changes in patient behaviour while working in demanding situations.
