Job Description & How to Apply Below
Location: City Of London

Morningstar seeks an experienced financial journalist for the position of markets reporter on our European editorial team, with a mandate to cover continental European stocks, bonds, and currencies as well as alternative investments. The successful candidate will write both fast‑paced markets stories and in‑depth analysis, and post translations of Morningstar stories to local‑language websites.

Our core mission is to help investors meet their financial goals, and we approach covering the markets through that lens. That means putting the day‑to‑day noise of the markets in context while informing investors about the news and trends that are critical to making smart decisions.

Morningstar’s editorial team writes and publishes news on the financial markets and investing along with digestible research content in the form of articles, data visualization, videos and podcasts. We function as an independent newsroom separate from the research departments.

Morningstar’s global websites are visited by millions of readers each month who are looking to make sense of the markets, find investment advice, and manage their finances. In Europe and the UK, Morningstar’s editorial team publishes in six languages, and each country‑specific website features a combination of local journalism and translations of stories from our global team.

The successful candidate for this role will write both original content and local‑language adaptations of other Morningstar stories. Fluency in Dutch or French is required; additional fluency in Italian, Spanish or German is a plus. Responsibilities include reviewing translations of articles by other reporters for publishing on websites aimed at readers in either of those languages.

We are looking for a reporter who can combine a lively, engaging writing style with a proven ability to make complex subjects accessible to a wide audience, from retail investors and pension savers to financial advisers and institutional investors.

The successful candidate will possess a sound understanding of financial markets and strong news judgement. The role requires the ability to write quick takes on big market moves, as well as the skills needed to craft deeper dives into key investing trends and more complex subjects where insights are gleaned from data and conversations with financial decision‑makers.

Morningstar’s hybrid work environment gives you the opportunity to collaborate in‑person each week as we’ve found that we’re at our best when we’re purposely together on a regular basis. In most of our locations, our hybrid work model is four days in‑office each week. A range of other benefits are also available to enhance flexibility as needs change. No matter where you are, you’ll have tools and resources to engage meaningfully with your global colleagues.

Responsibilities
  • Publish on average three articles a week, ranging from short takes to longer deep dives.
  • Provide readers with timely, informative articles on important moves in the markets and key individual stocks.
  • Harness both Morningstar’s and external data to create compelling analyses and highlight trends.
  • Build narratives around key investing trends, remaining ahead of the conversation on crucial levels, rotations and shifting dynamics.
  • Regionalise and translate stories produced by teammates in other bureaus for Morningstar websites in France and the Netherlands.
  • Fluency in Italian, Spanish or German is a plus.
Qualifications
  • A passion for the markets.
  • 3+ years actively covering stocks or other markets as a journalist.
  • Proven ability to write on deadline and for same‑day turnaround.
  • Demonstrated writing skills.
  • Strong news judgement for identifying subjects for articles.
  • At least a C1‑equivalent command in both writing and speech in Dutch or French.
  • Fluency in Italian, Spanish or German is a plus.
  • Curious, creative thinker with a collaborative approach to producing commentary and storytelling.
  • A collaborative mindset.
  • Demonstrated comfort with Excel and learning new databases and other tools.
