Introduction

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. Amazonian indigenous peoples have used the gifts of Pachamama (Mother Earth) to create art and goods such as bowls, cups, paints, jewelry, and textiles. Local dances celebrate the earth and tell stories of life in the rainforest.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to experience the cultures of the Ecuadorian Amazon through art, pottery, music, and dance. Interns support ongoing arts projects and may design and implement their own workshops on topics like art, marketing, tourism, or other interests with locals.

Possible activities
  • Learn about host community art forms and artisans
  • Attend music, dance, and storytelling events led by community members
  • Hike agroforestry farms to collect natural materials for drawing, jewelry making, dying, and ceramics
  • Practice weaving, jewelry making, wood carving, and other crafts with locals
  • Assist local entrepreneurs with design and marketing of woven goods, jewelry, and other products
  • Design and implement arts-based workshops to share with community members
  • Design workshops that incorporate art to transmit knowledge on topics such as recycling, environmental conservation, leadership, self-esteem, etc.
  • Assist with tourism activities, including cooking, cabin preparation, guiding visitors, translating, and explaining ongoing art projects
  • Organize English lessons with locals and exchange with Spanish and Kichwa lessons
