Wireless Communications Engineer - Spacetime UK
Aalyria is a leading technology company that supplies laser communications technology and temporospatial software-defined networking platforms to the aerospace industry. With technology acquired from Google, Aalyria is at the forefront of innovation in satellite and airborne mesh networks, as well as cislunar and deep-space communications. We are revolutionizing the orchestration and management of planetary mesh networks using any radio or optical spectrum, any orbit, and any hardware across land, sea, air, and space.
RoleOverview:
We are seeking a highly skilled engineer with strong expertise in wireless communications theory, with a strong mathematical background in linear algebra, matrix theory, signal processing and relevant industry experience. This engineer will work with a team of highly skilled software engineers, systems engineers and system architects on the development of algorithms for software-based channel estimation, prediction, radio-resource management (RRM) and optimization of multi-antennae (MIMO) communications for satellite and other wireless aerospace networks.
This could also include 3
GPP based Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).
The ideal candidate for this role is someone who has extensive industry experience in physical layer or radio resource management technology development and implementation, and will be able to bridge rigorous mathematical foundations with practical wireless system applications, including communicating complex concepts clearly to diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
Key Responsibilities:- Develop algorithms and implementation techniques for channel prediction, estimation, feedback processing, radio resource management and interference management for MIMO, beamforming, and multi-user wireless communication systems, both terrestrial and satellite/aerospace.
Apply advanced linear algebra, probability, matrix theory, game theory and other advanced techniques to wireless channel modeling, capacity analysis, signal processing and resource allocation problems. - Translate complex theoretical concepts and numerical analysis of wireless communications and resource optimization into intuitive explanations, visualizations, and engineering insights.
- Collaborate with system architects, and software engineers to integrate theory, algorithms and techniques developed into real-time resource management software implementations and simulation frameworks, including 3
GPP Self-Optimization Network (SON), O-RAN Near-RT and Non-RT RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC), Service Management and Orchestration (SMO), xApp and rApp frameworks, with an eye to computational efficiency and performance optimization - Prepare clear technical reports, presentations, design documents and knowledge-transfer material to support internal teams, partners, customers or contributions to industry standards, including 3
GPP for 5G, 5G Advanced and 6G, (as well as others). - Conduct system performance studies and trade-off analysis for customers or internal requirement and software architecture definition
Optionally: contribute to software-based simulations or processing and estimation frameworks (MATLAB, Python, C++, or similar) for validating theoretical models. - Optionally: actively participate to standards in SDOs such as 3
GPP, IEEE, IETF, DVB, etc.
- Advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related field, with a focus on wireless communications, signal processing, or information theory.
- Deep knowledge of:
- Wireless communications systems, communications and channel capacity theory (e.g . Shannon, Hartley, etc), MIMO systems, beamforming, precoding and channel estimation in wireless communications and/or sensing/radar
- Linear algebra and matrix decompositions (SVD, eigenvalue problems, etc.)
- Practical applications, preferably in RAN, silicon or radio resource management (RRM) systems (e.g. worked in directly applicable industry or applied research/R&D position)
- Probability theory and statistical signal processing
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with ability to derive insights from first principles.
- Demonstrated ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and intuitive manner (teaching, mentoring, or technical presentations).
- Hands-on experience with simulation and/or real-time computation tools, such as MATLAB, Python (Num Py/Scipy/Matplotlib), NVIDIA Sionna, NVIDIA Aerial SDK, Ansys STK, QuaDRiga, or other frameworks developed in suitable programming languages (e.g. C++, Golang, etc)
- Familiarity with wireless communication standards (LTE, 5G , WiFi, WiMAX, DVB-S2X or beyond).
- Experience with optimization methods, convex optimization, or machine learning for communications.
- Software engineering skills in Golang, C++, Java, Rust, Python or other languages
- Experience with AI/ML based signal processing techniques, neural Networks (NN), neural receivers and advanced…
