Chartered Civil Engineer; Insurance Industry

An opportunity for a civil engineer to work for a global insurance consultancy in their highly respected engineering and construction risk division. They are the firm of choice for leading insurers and brokers, providing critical expert advice on complex civil engineering risks. This position focuses on high value, international transportation infrastructure.

A successful and long established insurance consultancy. They posted their strongest group financial performance last year with revenue in excess of £200 million and their growth continues. Their expertise encompasses civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and process engineering disciplines, with a focus on providing advice for CAR (Contractors All Risks) and EAR (Erection All Risks) insurance policies. Your job title will be "Civil Risk Engineer" and you will be providing advice on the risks associated with large and complex civil engineering transportation projects. These will include major highway schemes, rail infrastructure, bridges, and tunnel developments, with assignments typically in Europe, South East Asia, Latin America, the USA, and the Middle East. International travel is typically required once per month.

You will provide practical, real‑world insight — offering front‑end advice to underwriters and risk managers, and then monitor the progress of insured projects as they move through construction.

• Management – Assessing the track record and capabilities of a project’s management team, their governance structures, and their approach to risk.
• Technical – Reviewing the design standards adopted, construction methodologies, and the suitability of materials, equipment, and plant being deployed.
• Environment – Evaluating the project’s location, exposure to natural perils, and the wider political, cultural, and security context in which it is being delivered.
• Programme & Budget – Identifying high‑risk phases of work, testing the viability of construction sequencing, and benchmarking against comparable transportation projects worldwide.

A chartered civil engineer with a background that includes major transportation infrastructure. This experience could have been gained with a contractor, consultant, or a client organisation. An understanding of the construction process, buildability issues and programming is essential, some site based experience is required. The position calls for a senior level engineer with ten plus years’ experience, with a mix of technical, practical and communication skills.

Previous civil engineering risk or insurance related experience is advantageous, but not essential.
