The Environment Agency’s Strategy Directorate is looking for two enthusiastic individuals to support its strategic thinking and strengthen relationships with Government, Parliament, and key stakeholders. You may join either the Government Relations team or the Strategy team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Co‑ordinating inputs to key government processes and drafting briefing documents for ministers and senior leaders.
  • Supporting the Chair or Chief Executive with high‑quality information for decision‑making.
  • Producing strategic insights on future environmental challenges such as flood risk, climate change, environmental protection, circular economy, planning, and water resources.
  • Assisting with the delivery of the Environment Agency’s corporate strategy (EA2030).
  • Supporting emergency response during major flood incidents.

Essential qualifications and skills:

  • Political judgement and strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build networks and influence outcomes.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, including drafting ministerial briefings.
  • Project management, analytical thinking, and anticipation of political or stakeholder activity.
  • Calm decision‑making under pressure and readiness to seek support when needed.
  • Knowledge of environmental issues or sustainable growth and experience with organisation‑wide strategies.

Candidate information packs include competency questions on:

  • Communicating Effectively – listening, engaging and conveying information clearly.
  • Managing Customers and Partners – balancing competing priorities and responding rapidly.
  • Taking Decisions and Solving Problems – analysing alternatives and making timely decisions.
