Depending on the assigned clinical area within the Ambulatory Care Unit, the Registered Nurse (RN) may be required to be competent in multiple clinical settings. This job description addresses various scenarios where nurses are required to work in one or more areas requiring advanced training and experience.
In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization, the RN practices in accordance with the Professional Standards and Scope of Practice for Registered Nurses:
Standards, Limits, Conditions as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as well as within a client and family‑centered care model. The RN is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of client care, according to organizational policies, procedures, standards, and unit‑specific protocols. Working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, the RN ensures the delivery of client‑centered care by assisting individual clients and their families to respond to changing health‑care needs.
The RN demonstrates a specialized body of knowledge and bases practice on nursing science and related content from other sciences and humanities.
- Completes a comprehensive assessment of the physiological, psychological, socio‑cultural, and spiritual needs of the client and family unit and determines client status and responses to actual or potential health problems.
- Coordinates and oversees the overall care of the patient in a team nursing or interprofessional approach (where applicable). Sets priorities, provides clinical expertise and leadership for the patient’s plan of care with the interprofessional team and assigns tasks as appropriate to other members of the healthcare team. Evaluates the appropriateness and effectiveness of treatments and interventions on an ongoing basis.
- Ensures the client and family actively participates in the development, implementation, and ongoing modification of the plan of care, including the long and short‑term goals. Develops and implements learning plans to meet identified client learning needs.
- Establishes a therapeutic relationship using effective interpersonal and interviewing techniques, ensuring client choice and autonomy in decision making and care planning. Acts as a role model by demonstrating empathy, trust, and respect in all interpersonal relationships, and recognizes personal impact on team dynamics.
- Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team and participates in rounds and/or patient care conferences to ensure effective, consistent, and comprehensive care planning and delivery. Justifies decisions with reference to knowledge or theory.
- Ensures pertinent information and significant clinical changes are communicated to the client and family and members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Reviews pertinent data obtained through investigative procedures, and by other members of the health care team (including medical history, progress notes, consultation reports, lab reports, etc.) and incorporates findings into the plan of care.
- Documents assessments, records of observation, care provision and client responses according to professional standards and facility guidelines which may include computerized records and databases.
