To support this work, we are looking to appoint EGS Consultants with a subspecialty interest in either colorectal, paediatrics or complex interventional endoscopy (non‑exhaustive). The successful applicant will join an existing team of Emergency Surgeons. Our department is fully funded and is supported through the National Forum for Acute Surgeons.
Full support will be in place to develop any subspecialty interests within the job plan, whether colorectal, children’s surgery or advanced endoscopy.
Responsibilities- Work with the current specialty leads to build the initial working patterns and operating procedures for the department to include the EGS wards, operating theatres and ambulatory care.
- This will include the use of and development of ambulatory and alternative provision models to support patients.
- Provide an Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service of the highest standards for Cornwall.
- Provide and develop a specialty interest within the realms of children’s general surgery, colorectal or upper GI surgery, hepatobiliary or complex endoscopic practice.
- Share responsibility with colleagues for the day‑to‑day management of the EGS department, including the development of a research portfolio.
- Teach and train junior staff and medical students in EGS, including developing weekly evidence‑based governance and service development.
- Ensure ongoing development via Continuing Medical Education (CME).
- Fulfill duties of the weekly timetable, including any out‑of‑hours work.
- Provide patient cover for off‑site or absent consultants.
- Engage in some elements of flexible timetabling with cooperation.
- Support colleagues throughout the multidisciplinary team and promote a culture of respect.
