About Cumberland Council

Cumberland Council is committed to safeguarding children and supporting families. The Child Support and Protect Team works closely with children, young people, and families to reduce risks, promote safety, and deliver interventions that improve wellbeing.

Job purpose

As a Social Worker within the Support and Protect Team, you will assess and manage cases where children may be at risk of harm. You will provide support, develop care plans, and collaborate with families and multi-agency partners to safeguard children and support their development.

What you will do

Conduct thorough assessments of children and families where safeguarding concerns exist.

Develop, implement, and monitor child protection and support plans to achieve the best outcomes.

Respond promptly to safeguarding alerts and take appropriate action in line with statutory requirements.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date case records, ensuring compliance with professional and legal standards.

Collaborate with colleagues, schools, health services, and other agencies to deliver coordinated support.

Advocate for children’s rights and ensure their voices are heard in decision-making.

Participate in supervision, case reviews, and professional development.

Contribute to service improvement by sharing knowledge, experience, and best practice.

Person specification

Qualifications

Recognised Social Work qualification (CQSW, DipSW, BA/MA in Social Work)

Registration with Social Work England

Experience

Child protection, safeguarding, or family support work.

Proven ability to work effectively in multi-agency environments.

Skills & Abilities

Strong assessment, case management, and risk management skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, and professionals.

Ability to manage complex caseloads under pressure.

Sound knowledge of child protection legislation and safeguarding frameworks.

Commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and anti-discriminatory practice.

Enhanced DBS check

Full UK driving licence may be required
