We are recruiting a Materials Engineer to support a customer site based in Derby. This is a 12-month rolling contract, Outside IR35, requiring 100% onsite attendance.
The Materials Engineer will report into the Manufacturing & Supply Chain Manager and will be responsible for the selection, characterisation, testing, and qualification of materials to ensure they meet mechanical, thermal, and lifting requirements for turbo machinery-based products.
Role OverviewThe role covers all materials used in the manufacture of Roto Dynamic Heater (RDH) and Roto Dynamic Reactor (RDR) products. Materials range from austenitic steels through to aerospace-grade nimonics, with additional exposure to brazing and surface coatings. The scope will be aligned to the experience of the successful candidate and will span product design support, materials development, and manufacturing validation activities.
Key Responsibilities- Product Introduction
- Support design teams with materials expertise during new product development
- Use materials data to support design studies and component life justification
- Materials Development
- Interpret design requirements for new components
- Work with third parties to develop materials data for next-generation components
- Support achievement of required component life
- Manufacturing & Supply Chain Support
- Work with suppliers to develop and optimise manufacturing processes (e.g. heat treatment, coatings, brazing)
- Support validation of supplier manufacturing methods
- Analyse and review material defects, non-conformances, and anomalies
- Support problem resolution during manufacturing issues
- Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare technical reports and specifications related to materials testing and inspection
- Support production documentation and compliance activities
- Collaboration
- Work closely with cross-functional teams including Design, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain
- Build strong working relationships with internal stakeholders and suppliers
- Align materials activities with broader manufacturing and business objectives
- Degree in Materials Engineering or equivalent industry experience
- Minimum 5 years' experience in Materials Engineering or a relevant discipline
- Strong technical knowledge of turbo machinery
- Experience working with materials for components such as:
- Rotors
- Casings
- Aerofoils
- Fabrications
- Assembly & Test
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with proven root cause analysis experience
- Flexible approach, comfortable working across a broad range of tasks
