Accounts Payable Specialist

Description We are looking for an Accounts Payable Specialist to support invoice and payment operations for a Contract position based in Detroit, Michigan. This role focuses on accurate invoice review, purchase order validation, and timely coordination with internal partners to keep payables moving efficiently. The ideal candidate brings strong attention to detail, sound judgment around discrepancies, and a solid understanding of tax-related considerations within accounts payable.

Responsibilities:

- Review incoming vendor invoices to confirm completeness, proper authorization, and adherence to company payment standards.

- Reconcile invoices against purchase orders and receiving records to ensure accurate three-way matching before processing.

- Investigate pricing, quantity, or receipt discrepancies and work with the appropriate teams to resolve issues quickly.

- Partner with procurement, supply chain, operations, and other internal stakeholders to obtain approvals and clarify outstanding invoice questions.

- Support updates to purchase orders when vendor changes or internal requests affect pricing, quantities, or other transaction details.

- Maintain clear records of purchase order revisions to help ensure payments remain aligned with approved budgets and documentation.

- Assess invoices and related payments for applicable tax treatment, including situations requiring sales tax review or self-assessment.

- Coordinate with tax and finance partners to help ensure tax obligations are recorded and handled in accordance with established procedures.

- Assist with payment activities such as ACH transactions and check runs while following internal controls and processing timelines. Requirements - Experience in accounts payable with hands-on responsibility for invoice processing and payment support.

- Working knowledge of account coding and coding invoices accurately within established financial guidelines.

- Proven ability to perform three-way matching involving invoices, purchase orders, and receiving documentation.

- Familiarity with ACH payments, check runs, and standard accounts payable controls.

- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.

- Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and communicate clearly about approval or documentation issues.

- Understanding of tax-related accounts payable considerations, including sales tax review and compliance support.
