Job DescriptionThis nursing specialty requires an ability to consider patient condition, comfort and safety immediately prior to an operation, while setting up and assisting surgeons during an operation and en‑route to the Recovery Room. Knowledge of O.R. standards, sterile technique, pre‑op and post‑op care is essential.
Area specialists (team leaders) will be appointed to assist with equipment, instrumentation, supplies, and staff orientation to the particular specialties. They must have significant experience in the given specialty, be highly organized, assist in maintaining a positive environment within the theater and have an ability to teach other nurses.
Responsibilities- Assesses the patient and completeness of preparation as they are received into the OR room and following up as required.
- Prepares the theatre, equipment, and instrumentation for each assigned case and collaborates with colleagues to help ensure a safe environment for patient and staff.
- Assists or guides the safe transfer of patients to and from the Operating Room verifying appropriate documentation has occurred.
- Interacts with the patient who is awake, taking steps to reduce patient anxiety and discomfort.
- Recognizes emergency conditions and responds appropriately.
- Anticipates surgeons' needs during a case and responds quickly in the role of scrub or circulating nurse.
- Adheres to OR standards with respect to instrument, sponge, and needle/staple counts and documentation.
- Expedites OR turnaround while maintaining OR standards of cleanliness: ensures appropriate cleaning between cases, communicates effectively with CSSD, OR Technicians, and cleaners.
- Contributes to the smooth functioning of the OR through good communication with all who work in the room or bring resources to it, the Recovery Room staff and those on the surgical units.
- Preferably hold a post graduate certificate in OR Techniques or
- Post‑graduate education in OR with a minimum of 2 years OR experience in at least general surgery, orthopedics, and two of either ophthalmology, urology, plastics, ENT or lithotripsy.
