Job Summary: The Histopathology Department at Dorset Country Hospital is recruiting a well‑motivated, enthusiastic Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly team. This permanent, full‑time role reports to the Head Biomedical Scientist / Histopathology Laboratory Manager.
Applicants should be committed to high‑quality service delivery, have a background in a diagnostic laboratory, and possess specialist knowledge of histopathology processes. Ideally, you have completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma for Cellular Pathology. HCPC‑registered individuals without this diploma may be considered for a Band 5 position, dependent on progress towards completing the Specialist Portfolio within an appropriate timeframe.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and participate in the histopathology team, ensuring the satisfactory delivery of the full range of services.
- Work closely with consultants, histopathologists, and laboratory staff, maintaining effective communication with all service users.
- Handle routine and urgent histology, non‑gynaecological cytopathology, andrology, and immunohistochemistry samples.
- Operate and support state‑of‑the‑art equipment under the Southern Counties Pathology (South
6) network.
- HCPC registration.
- BCS in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent.
- Evidence of specialist training in histopathology technical areas.
- Completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio for Cellular Pathology.
- At least 3 years post‑registration experience in a histopathology laboratory.
- Evidence of CPD and training in tissue transfer, small dissection, and immunohistochemistry techniques.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills at all levels.
- Ability to follow SOPs and local policies, plan and prioritise work, and work independently or as part of a team.
- Experience working in an NHS laboratory environment.
- Experience with diagnostic cytology techniques.
- Knowledge of COSHH and risk assessment requirements in a laboratory.
Band: Band 6
Salary: £38,682 to £46,580 per annum
Contract: Permanent
