Head of Finance, Governance and Risk
Carnegie UK is recruiting a new Head of Finance.
We are an endowed charity that has worked to improve wellbeing in the UK and Ireland for over 100 years. Today we seek to influence public policy and practice, building on robust evidence and research to argue for change.
We are looking for an experienced finance professional who is motivated by the prospect of working in a values‑led policy organisation.
Carnegie UK manages £46m of assets under management and has an annual income of about £1.65m. Our investments are managed by professional advisers in line with our Investment Policy, which includes a commitment to investing in ways that align with our mission.
The Head of Finance, Governance and Risk leads on all financial and risk management for the Trust. The post‑holder has overall responsibility for Carnegie UK’s systems of financial control and supports the CEO on financial and investment strategy and planning. They also support the Finance Committee, the Audit and Risk Committee, and the wider Board of Trustees, and act as the first point of contact for the Investment Manager and the auditors.
The role includes responsibility for leading the organisation’s approach to identifying, assessing and managing corporate risk, and for advising on formal and regulatory aspects of our governance. The Head of Finance, Governance and Risk is a key member of Carnegie UK’s Senior Management Team, reporting to the CEO, and will play an active role in forward planning and decision‑making within the organisation.
The postholder is expected to act as a role model for our values and ways of working.
- Permanent endowment – long‑term stewardship of the Trust’s endowment, including managing the relationship with investment managers
- Provision of financial information and management of budgets

- Governance – operational approach to all governance and legal matters
- Highly organised, capable of working independently with a clear appreciation of team relationships and proactively making connections
- Actively shares knowledge, information and resources within teams and across the organisation
- Effective communication with colleagues, Trustees, partners and other stakeholders
- Representation of Carnegie UK at high‑level meetings, building rapport and presenting ideas with authority
- Fosters a culture of continuous improvement, balancing innovation and risk to maximise impact
- Approachable and solutions‑focused when problems arise, encouraging a supportive learning environment
- Reports confidently and with authority to the appropriate governance structures
Flexible and supportive working environment: 4 days a week (28‑hour week). 4 paid days per year for volunteering. Two days a week in Andrew Carnegie House, Dunfermline, with additional flexibility for the right candidate.
