Job overview

The mortuary service is trust-wide; there are three mortuaries located at Northwick Park, Ealing and Central Middlesex Hospitals. The post involves frequent exposure to highly distressing situations, maintains concentration for long periods, manages resources, documents and records accurately, supports efficient running of the mortuaries, and rotates duties across sites according to operational requirements.

Main duties
  • Professional responsibility:
    Manage and operate the mortuary service, demonstrate initiative, sound judgment and timely decision-making to support seamless operation. Previous significant experience in a mortuary setting is necessary but appropriate training will be offered.
  • Communication:
    Attend meetings as necessary to represent the department and provide specialist advice and information. Provide support and communicate to Pathology service manager and GM.
  • Key working relationships:
    Establish and maintain good relationships with staff within the Trust, the Coroner’s Office, funeral directors, Police and members of the public.
  • Management:
    Oversight of Mortuary Technician Band 6, Mortuary Assistant and other cross-site positions as required.
  • Training:
    Previous experience in a mortuary setting is necessary; appropriate training will be offered as this role is developmental in nature.
  • Information management:
    Work in line with governance and data protection protocols and ensure confidentiality is always maintained at all times.
Qualifications
  • GCSE level or equivalent in English, certificates required.
  • RSPH Diploma or Certificate in Anatomical Pathology or Level 3 or Level 4 Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology.
Experience
  • Previous experience of working in a mortuary and dealing with deceased patients including foetus and children, dealing compassionately with bereaved relatives in distressing situations, and experience of working in a mortuary (hospital or Coroner’s).
  • Working in a mortuary technician role for a minimum of 1 year.
Knowledge
  • Mortuary procedures and documentation.
  • Infection control, health & safety and confidentiality issues.
Skills and abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Use own initiative where applicable.
  • IT and keyboard skills; use Outlook, Microsoft Office/Word/Excel spreadsheets.
  • Demonstrate accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work well under pressure.
  • Physically fit.
  • Full and valid UK driving licence and access to own vehicle which must be insured for use at work.
