Job Overview

An opportunity has arisen within the South East Bridges Team for a Senior Bridge Design Engineer to lead scheme delivery from one of our offices in South Queensferry, Stepps or Bonnyrigg.

The role involves delivering record bridge maintenance budgets with projects such as bridge refurbishment, bearing replacement, and strengthening schemes. BEAR Scotland, on behalf of Transport Scotland, manages over 850 structures across the South East trunk road network, including complex bridges.

Job Purpose

To lead the detailed design, procurement and construction management of bridge maintenance schemes.

Responsibilities and Activities
  • Supervise teams carrying out bridge assessment and design of maintenance or refurbishment schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with technical standards and manage submissions of departures from standard where applicable.
  • Produce tender documents, pre‑construction information packages, and evaluate tenders to assist with contract awards.
  • Manage the internal financial performance of individual schemes.
  • Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures within the company’s Integrated Management Systems.
  • Act as Principal Designer and, where required, Principal Contractor under CDM Regulations.
  • Coordinate the production, issue and archiving of drawings, documents and scheme files.
  • Conduct environmental screening and implement mitigation measures before work commences.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Relevant experience in assessment, design and maintenance of highway bridge structures.
  • Professional qualifications and membership of an appropriate professional body (CEng, MICE, MIStruct

    E).
  • Full approved UK driving licence.
  • Skilled in project management of schemes and team management.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.
