What's the role?

This is an exciting, and rare opportunity to support sustainability consultancy within our Building Services Engineering Design Consultancy by conducting building physics and sustainability assessments for clients and project teams.

This will also include supporting the Mechanical and Electrical engineering teams in demonstrating low carbon and low energy design solutions. There will be a requirement to conduct whole life carbon analysis, including embodied carbon calculations.

This role is ideally suited to recent graduates or early-career candidates developing their capability within sustainability and building services engineering. We welcome applications from recent graduates as well as candidates with up to two years’ relevant industry experience.

Working Conditions - 37.5 contractual hours per week, hybrid working Monday - Friday between the hours of 9am-5.30pm. The role is open to both our Edinburgh or Glasgow office.

Key Responsibilities:

Building Physics (Training will be provided)
  • Using IES Virtual Environment software
  • 3D model creation
  • Suncast (Solar Shading), Daylight & Sunlight analysis
  • Conceptual Energy Analysis
  • Operational in-use energy analysis (TM54)
  • Building Reg Energy Compliance – Part L & Section 6
  • Thermal Comfort Analysis - TM52 & TM59
  • Future Climate Analysis
  • Airflow Ventilation Analysis
  • Breathing Buildings modelling
  • HVAC sizing through analysis
  • LZCT feasibility studies
  • Assist with the preparation of SAP Calculations as required
Sustainability (Training to be provided)
  • BREEAM (New Construction & Refurbishment)
  • Review drawings, reports, and specifications for compliance
  • Write reports demonstrating compliance with standards.
  • Assist design team with providing evidence by creating templates and preparing statements.
  • Conduct site visits
  • Sustainability Planning Statements – Prepare planning reports, Review planning guidance.
  • Embodied carbon analysis
  • Bespoke Sustainability Assessments
  • Support the internal sustainability function to encourage its development within and outside the Company.
  • Work directly with clients and design teams, advising them on the best strategy for implementing sustainability.
  • Work with design teams in the successful delivery of BREEAM and other sustainability assessments on time and on budget.
  • Research into current and pending legislation or changes that will affect the industry and the role of consulting engineers.
  • Assist in preparing tenders and fee proposals.
  • Provide expert advice to clients and Rybka staff on sustainability through presentations, workshops, and discussion to help promote sustainability.
What we’re looking for:
  • Graduate qualification in engineering and / or other relevant degree.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, including Excel, Word and Outlook - essential
  • Competence in report writing - essential
  • Good presentation skills - essential
  • Knowledge of building physics.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies and low carbon design. Knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering systems.
  • Knowledge of embodied and whole life carbon.
  • Appreciation and experience of the Technical Standards and relevant British Standards.
  • Knowledge of Planning legislative requirements.
  • Knowledge of specification, simulation, and modelling techniques such as IES, One Click LCA, AutoCAD - Desirable
  • Experience of a range of construction projects.
