About this opportunity

Engineering Manager – Lead our engineering team at Xi Engineering Consultants, a professional consulting firm in Edinburgh, Scotland. This is a strategic engineering project manager and engineering team lead role where you’ll drive delivery excellence while developing world‑class technical professionals.

As our Engineering Delivery Manager, you’ll take accountability for team leadership, engineering resource planning, and translating technical capability into competitive service offerings. This isn’t a purely technical position – it’s a visible leadership role requiring strong people management and delivery coordination alongside your engineering expertise.

About Xi

Xi Engineering Consultants is a professional services firm specialising in applied engineering solutions including modelling, simulation, measurement, and data processing. Our mission is to deliver high‑impact technical services while maintaining a culture of respect, accountability, and continuous improvement. We’re growing our team and seeking an experienced engineering manager to lead our next phase of delivery excellence and team development.

The Engineering Manager Role

As Engineering Delivery Manager at Xi, you’ll lead, develop, and support our engineering team while ensuring project delivery is expertly planned, coordinated, and aligned with our commercial strategy. Your core focus will be on building a high‑performing, healthy, and productive engineering environment where technical professionals thrive and output accelerates toward best‑in‑class standards.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • People Leadership & Team Development: Conduct regular 1‑to‑1s, performance feedback sessions, and development planning with all engineering team members; build and reinforce clear expectations for professional behaviour; address underperformance, conflict, or behavioural issues with fairness, clarity, and professionalism; create a culture of accountability, respect, and shared responsibility; develop progression pathways and visible growth opportunities; lead your team with consistency, ensuring alignment with company priorities and values.
  • Delivery Coordination & Planning: Own day‑to‑day engineering project planning, resource allocation, and delivery coordination; improve team productivity, focus, and effectiveness across active projects and work streams; ensure engineering delivery is realistically scoped, priced, and resourced; translate technical capability into repeatable, competitive services and offerings; support engineers to maintain agreed technical standards while expanding capability.
  • Stakeholder

    Collaboration:

Work closely with our Commercial Director to align engineering delivery capability with sales, proposals, and service development; partner with our Governance Infrastructure Manager (vacancy) to ensure processes align with ISO 9001 standards; collaborate with Project Managers to optimise planning, resourcing, and delivery coordination; engage with external partners on collaborative delivery and capability development.

What We’re Looking For

Hard Skills & Technical Requirements

  • Strong technical grounding in applied engineering disciplines such as modelling, simulation, measurement, data processing, or similar.
  • Substantial hands‑on engineering experience – enough to credibly lead and develop technical professionals.
  • Clear understanding of how engineering capability translates into services, products, and delivery models.
  • Proven experience planning and coordinating technical work across projects, teams, or work streams.
  • Capability to step in on technical matters while maintaining your leadership responsibilities.

Leadership & Behavioural Qualities

  • Leading and managing with clarity to build healthy teams.
  • Willing to hold firm boundaries and address gaps, regardless of technical seniority.
  • Focused on putting company priorities, standards, and culture ahead of individual preferences or technical egos.
  • Pragmatic and grounded, outcome‑focused rather than perfectionist – you deliver results that matter.

This role requires visible leadership and consistency.…
