We are looking for a Whole Life Carbon & Sustainability Engineer to support the delivery of sustainable building solutions, supporting the UK Properties & Buildings business delivering sustainability and Net Zero strategies with a focus on whole life carbon assessment and circular economy advice.

Accountabilities
  • Interpret and apply current and emerging UK and EU sustainability policy, legislation and guidance (e.g. local planning policies in the UK, Net Zero Carbon policies, Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in the EU).
  • Develop and deliver low carbon strategies aligned with project goals and client expectations.
  • Quantify the whole life carbon emissions of a wide range of building projects.
  • Ensure accuracy, quality, and timeliness of sustainability deliverables.
  • Commitment to our culture of continuous improvement.
  • Stay current with industry trends, software developments, and best practices in whole life carbon and circular economy.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with clients and design teams to produce accurate reports and identify opportunities to reduce both embodied and operational carbon emissions.
  • Conduct whole life carbon assessments including:
    • Compliance with RICS Professional Standard "Whole Life Carbon Assessment for the Built Environment" (2023)
    • Building services embodied carbon assessments following the TM65 calculation methodology
    • Façade assessments following the CWCT calculation methodology
    • Compliance with upcoming UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard requirements
    • Alignment with specific client requirements for reporting of whole life carbon emissions
    • Quantification of appropriate low carbon approaches considering both alternative design options and alternative material specifications in line with current industry guidance and market trends
  • Conduct whole life carbon and circular economy workshops with project stakeholders to communicate requirements, design solutions and results to a high standard.
  • Contribute to reports required for planning from a whole life carbon and circular economy perspective to support planning submissions (e.g. Energy & Sustainability Statements and Environmental Impact Assessments).
  • Contribute to BREEAM, LEED, and other sustainability certifications, e.g., through Mat
    01 assessments and associated reporting requirements.
Key Competencies and Experience
  • A technical understanding of Whole Life Carbon assessment standards, methodologies and guidance (RICS Professional Standard, TM65, CWCT, etc.).
  • Shows a commitment and drive for low‑carbon design; with a background in lifecycle assessment.
  • Experience undertaking Whole Life Carbon assessments with minimal design information and assessing the suitability of the design information provided.
  • Skilled in assessing the feasibility and quantifying the impacts of low embodied carbon design solutions.
  • Analytical, data interpretation, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Experienced in report writing, presentation, and time management skills.
  • Experience working with a range of carbon data sources (Environmental Product Declarations, TM65 forms, Product Environmental Profile).
Qualifications
  • Degree in an Architectural, Engineering or Environmental subject.
