Project Surveyor / Estimator
Location: Writtle, Essex
Salary: £60,000 – £65,000 per annum
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
A well-established Design & Build office fit-out contractor is seeking an experienced Project Surveyor / Estimator to join their growing team. The business delivers high-quality commercial workplace projects across a wide range of sectors and is known for its collaborative approach and strong project delivery.
This is an excellent opportunity to take a lead role within a small, professional team, with real influence over pre-construction, commercial processes, and project delivery.
The RoleThe Project Surveyor / Estimator will be responsible for managing estimating, cost planning, and commercial support from early project stages through to completion. The role involves close collaboration with design, project, and site teams, as well as subcontractors and clients.
Projects are typically delivered within a 2-hour travel radius of the office, with the role based in Writtle, Essex
.
- Lead and manage pre-construction and estimating activities across multiple projects
- Prepare accurate cost plans, estimates, and tender submissions
- Interpret architectural and technical drawings to develop detailed project pricing
- Identify opportunities for value engineering and cost efficiencies
- Develop, manage, and control project budgets and financial forecasts
- Monitor project costs to ensure delivery within agreed budgets
- Assess commercial risks and implement cost control strategies
- Engage, negotiate, and manage subcontractors and suppliers
- Establish project-specific rates and supply chain agreements
- Maintain strong working relationships to ensure quality and value
- Provide commercial and cost support to live projects
- Assist with project programming, schedules, and Gantt charts
- Identify and manage risks and opportunities throughout project delivery
- Ensure compliance with construction regulations and industry standards
- Support the development and refinement of estimating and pre-construction processes
- Maintain clear and effective communication across internal teams and external stakeholders
- Contribute to ongoing improvements in commercial and project delivery practices
- Proven experience in an estimating or project surveying role within Design & Build
- Strong knowledge of commercial interiors and office fit-out construction
- Experience providing commercial support across multiple projects
- Ability to interpret drawings and specifications accurately
- High level of attention to detail and commercial awareness
- Proficient in spreadsheets and estimating/quoting systems
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
