The Aircraft Prepper plays a crucial role in ensuring aircraft are ready for various operations, including painting and detailing. The role involves preparing aircraft surfaces, interiors, and components according to strict specifications, safety protocols, and company standards. The ideal candidate will possess a meticulous eye for detail, an understanding of aviation safety, and the ability to work efficiently and accurately in a fast‑paced environment.
SurfacePreparation
- Thorough cleaning of aircraft exteriors (fuselage, wings, tail, landing gear) using approved cleaning agents and techniques to remove dirt, grime, oil, and other contaminants.
- Degreasing and decontamination of surfaces prior to painting or detailing.
- Masking and unmasking of windows, sensors, pitot tubes, and other sensitive components to protect them during various processes.
- Sanding, scuffing, and applying etch primers or adhesion promoters to prepare surfaces for paint.
- Application of temporary protective coatings or wraps to aircraft surfaces.
- Preparation of aircraft interior parts, including cabins, galleys, lavatories, and cockpits.
- Cleaning and preparing individual aircraft components (e.g., interior panels, exterior panels, flying controls, undercarriage fairings, propeller blades and spinners) for painting.
- Performing pre‑ and post‑preparation checks to ensure work meets quality standards and specifications.
- Identifying and reporting any damage, defects, or issues with the aircraft or components.
- Maintaining and cleaning tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensuring proper storage and inventory of cleaning supplies and materials.
- Operating painting equipment (e.g., sanders, polishing machines) safely and effectively.
- Adhering strictly to all aviation safety regulations, company policies, and health and safety guidelines.
- Following correct procedures for handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Participating in safety briefings and training programs.
- Collaborating effectively with maintenance technicians, painters, detailers, and operations staff.
- Communicating any issues or progress clearly and concisely to supervisors.
- Maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
- Proven experience in a hands‑on role requiring meticulous attention to detail (e.g., automotive detailing, industrial cleaning, or similar) is advantageous but not essential.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong understanding and commitment to health and safety procedures.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform tasks requiring bending, kneeling, lifting, and working at heights (with appropriate safety measures).
- Valid driver’s licence (desirable for airside operations).
- Right to work in the UK.
- Previous experience in an aviation environment (e.g., airport ground staff, aircraft detailing, maintenance support).
- Knowledge of aircraft cleaning agents, materials, and techniques.
- Familiarity with aviation regulatory bodies (e.g., EASA, CAA) and their requirements.
- Formal training or certifications in aircraft detailing, surface preparation, or related fields.
- Meticulous attention to detail: exceptional eye for cleanliness, precision, and order.
- Reliability & punctuality: dependable and consistent in attendance and work ethic.
- Proactive & self‑motivated: takes initiative and can work with minimal supervision.
- Adaptability: ability to adjust to changing priorities and work schedules.
- Problem‑solving: can identify and address minor issues efficiently.
- Communication skills: clear and concise communication, both written and verbal.
- Team player: works collaboratively and supports colleagues.
- Safety conscious: prioritises safety in all tasks and decisions.
- Stamina & physical dexterity: capable of performing repetitive tasks and physically demanding work.
- Primarily based in a hangar or outdoor airfield environment, which may involve exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and fumes.
- May require working evenings, weekends, and public holidays depending on operational demands.
- Requirement to wear appropriate PPE at all times (supplied by the company).
