Job Description

Do you want to make a lasting positive change to the environment? As a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you can. Large Slaughterhouses and Animal By‑Products installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. The UK BAT Author is responsible for drafting BAT Conclusions, liaising with Technical Working Groups, and presenting a final document suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide, environmental standard for industry.

Responsibilities
  • Draft BAT Conclusions and related technical documentation.
  • Liaise with Technical Working Groups and external stakeholders.
  • Present final documents to relevant authorities and industry representatives.
  • Apply specialist knowledge of the slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products industry.
  • Analyse technical arguments and data critically.
  • Manage projects to meet deadlines and deliver high‑quality outputs.

Travel and overnight stays may be required.

Requirements
  • At least 5 years of working experience in environmental regulation within the slaughterhouse and animal‑by‑products sector.
  • Solid understanding of UK and EU industrial environmental legislation, including the IED and the Environmental Permitting Regulations.
  • Strong technical analysis and data collection skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proactive planning, prioritising, and organising tasks to achieve timely results.
  • Capability to respond flexibly to challenges and build consensus.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusive practices.
