OverviewAs a member of the military, Geomatics Technicians capture, analyze, process, present, disseminate and manage geospatial data to support the operations of the Canadian Government, especially the Navy, Army, Air Force and Special Forces.

Geomatics Technicians are specialists, primarily members of the Army, but may support all CAF exercises and operations, including those led by the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Special Forces, as well as other Government of Canada work and various Allies. Most work is done in office environments within Canada, using high‑tech computer workstations and specialised software.
Technicians are employed in units that train in garrison and in the field and deploy on operations. Opportunities include international postings, participation in national and international exercises and training.

Previous work experience or career‑related skills are not required. CAF recruiters can help determine if your interests and attributes match the criteria for this occupation.
The minimum required education is completion of provincial Grade 11 (or Quebec Secondary
5) with Grade 11 Applied Math or Math 426 in Quebec. Foreign education may be accepted.
CAF will pay successful recruits to attend the diploma programme at an approved Canadian college through the Non‑Commissioned Member Subsidised Training and Education Programme (NCMSTEP). Students receive full‑time salary including medical and dental care and full pay for vacation time in exchange for service with the CAF for a period of time.
TrainingThe first stage of training is the Basic Military Qualification course (Basic Training) at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint‑Jean‑sur‑Richelieu, Quebec. It provides core skills common to all trades and meets CAF physical fitness standards.
Geomatics Technicians then attend the School of Military Mapping at Algonquin College, a detachment of the Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa, Ontario. Instruction covers:
- Mathematics and survey
- Photogrammetry
- Remote sensing software and data
- Geographic information systems and data
- Production of geospatial data
- Navigation systems
- Geomatics product reproduction process
- Computer hardware and software
- Geomatics product distribution process
Specialised skill development may be offered through formal courses and on‑the‑job training, including:
- Geodetic terrestrial and aerial survey training
- Geospatial database management
- Advanced geomatics applications
- Advanced terrain analysis
- Geomatics engineering diploma
