Company Description

At CERN , the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction

We are looking for a motivated Electrical Technician to join our diverse team working on the development and operation of large-scale power electronics systems that energise CERN’s particle accelerators. These accelerators act as powerful microscopes, allowing scientists from around the world to explore the fundamental laws of nature.

You will collaborate closely with engineers, technicians, and specialists in power electronics and system integration, contributing to the design, assembly, installation, testing, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of multi‑megawatt power converters and Static Var Compensators. If you are curious, hands‑on, and eager to learn, you will find your place here.

You will join the Accelerator Systems Department (SY), which is responsible for the beam‑related technical systems of the CERN accelerators. The SY teams design, build and operate equipment systems in all CERN accelerators, and are engaged in ambitious forward‑looking R&D programs.

  • Contribute to the design and development of electrical subassemblies and electromechanical systems for multi‑megawatt power converters, and static var compensators, including the preparation of 3D CAD drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Assemble and/or supervise the assembly of electrical components and prototypes, and carry out installation activities for large‑scale power conversion systems.
  • Support testing and commissioning, including the preparation and execution of system tests, setup of instrumentation, and performance of measurements.
  • Participate in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of multi‑megawatt power conversion systems, performing fault finding, repairs, and preventive maintenance as required.
  • Prepare and update technical procedures, documentation, and reports related to design, testing, and maintenance activities.
  • Follow established operational and safety procedures when working with high‑power and high‑voltage systems, ensuring a strong culture of safety and continuous improvement in the workplace.
Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

Required experience:

  • Proven experience in electrical assembly, wiring, cabling, and integration of industrial or laboratory equipment.
  • Hands‑on experience in the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical and/or electronic systems.
  • Use of instrumentation for electrical measurements, diagnostics, and troubleshooting.

Desired experience:

  • Experience working with high‑power and/or high‑voltage systems.
  • Basic knowledge of electronic circuits and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design.
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: ability to read and produce electrical schematics and wiring diagrams; basic knowledge of 3D CAD tools for mechanical/electromechanical assemblies.
  • Knowledge and application of instrumentation and measurement techniques: measurement tools like oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analysers, and similar.
  • Construction, test and installation of power electronic components and systems.
  • Operation and maintenance of power electronic components and systems.
  • Managing self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
  • Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Solving problems: addressing complex problems by breaking them down into manageable components.
  • Working in teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
