At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
IntroductionAs a Mechanical Technician, you will join the ATLAS Detector Operation Group at CERN and be part of the team that is maintaining and operating the ATLAS detector as well as supporting the detector upgrade. In this upgrade you will play a crucial role, taking part in significant installations of the detector systems in the challenging environment of the experimental cavern.
Your versatility, hands‑on experience and strong team spirit will be essential to mastering the exciting challenges the upgrade presents.
- Installation of new sub‑detectors involving specialised mechanical tooling and precise positioning.
- Installation of specific access platforms and standard scaffolding towers in various configurations.
- Participation to sub‑detector movements, which require accurate positioning and the operation of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, as well as electromechanical equipment.
- Definition of manufacturing methods.
- Manufacturing of parts and tooling using both conventional and CNC machines.
- Assembling of different components according to instructions, with adjustments to ensure optimal functionality.
- Application of mechanical measurement techniques and conventional dimensional metrology.
Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanics or a related field.
Experience- Demonstrated experience in on‑site installation of mechanical devices or structures.
- Strong experience in machining using both conventional and computer‑numerically‑controlled (CNC) machines.
- Good understanding of mechanical design drawings and tolerance specifications.
- Experience in scaffolding or personnel‑platform installation would be an asset.
- Initial experience in operation of hydraulic, pneumatic, or electromechanical equipment would be an asset.
- Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation.
- Assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
- Manufacturing of mechanical parts.
- Programming and use of CNC machine‑tools and machining centres.
- Assembly and integration of experiments.
- Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
