Our SAW Instructors maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures and serves our members and community as a whole, through our YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
This program teaches children the skills on how to be safe in and around water. We partner with area schools to provide opportunities for all Walworth County second graders to participate in this program FREE thanks to a generous grant by Kikkoman Foods. As a SAW Swim Instructor, you will play a vital role in promoting water safety and teaching swimming skills to individuals of all ages. Your energetic approach and passion for swimming will inspire students to develop confidence in the water while ensuring their safety and enjoyment. You will be responsible for creating engaging lesson plans, maintaining the pool environment, and providing exceptional guest services.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Conduct swimming lessons for various skill levels, ensuring a fun and safe learning environment
- Develop personalized lesson plans tailored to individual student needs and goals
- Monitor pool activities to ensure safety and adherence to all safety protocols
- Perform routine pool maintenance, including cleaning and chemical balancing
- Provide first aid and CPR assistance as needed, demonstrating your commitment to student safety
- Engage with guests to enhance their experience, answering questions and providing support
- Assist with heavy lifting tasks related to pool equipment setup and maintenance
- Collaborate with fellow instructors to create a positive team atmosphere
- Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows, reviews, and responds to all emergency procedures and situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
- Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and other staff.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Performs chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action.
- Attends all staff meetings and training as required.
- Maintains the cleanliness of the pool area.
- Strong swimming skills with the ability to teach various techniques effectively
- Experience in lifeguarding or swim instruction.
- Knowledge of pool maintenance procedures and safety standards.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR.
- Excellent communication skills with a focus on guest services.
- Minimum age of 15.
- Must hold Current Red Cross Lifeguard or YMCA Lifeguarding Certification.
- Ability to maintain certification and level of physical and mental readiness.
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Typical requirements within 30 days of hire include completion of Child Abuse Prevention videos, all paperwork, and signing in to apps needed for dept.
