We’re looking for bright, motivated school leavers who bring energy, new ideas and a fresh perspective to help us become the recognised leader in construction and engineering.
Role OverviewAs a trainee planner, you will work alongside a project planner to provide construction planning support. This role offers extensive learning opportunities to develop your planning and interpersonal skills.
Key Deliverables and Accountabilities- Initially produce detailed project programmes with assistance from the Project Planner and team members.
- Become competent in producing programmes independently across all project phases – design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Develop an understanding of construction delivery techniques and methodologies.
- Liaise with project teams to capture and collate weekly progress, marking up charts and drawings with as‑built information to support communication of progress.
- Communicate with internal departments to give and receive information.
- Collate production output per week or per man‑hour per technique.
- Achieve proficiency in planning software packages such as Primavera P6, Asta Power project, and Synchro.
- Assist in developing project‑specific planning and production control systems.
- Help produce detailed schedules that outline key logistical constraints.
- Support the creation of design information release and material delivery schedules to site.
- Contribute to producing project progress reports.

Apprenticeship ProviderLaing O'Rourke collaborates with trusted training providers. Successful candidates will apply to the provider for the chosen apprenticeship route.
Entry Requirements- SQA Highers at ABBB or equivalent
- A‑Levels at ABC or BBB
- Scottish Baccalaureate Pass
- International Baccalaureate 29 points
- Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering alongside SQA Highers at AAB
- Combination of qualifications totalling 96 SCQF credits at level 6, or minimum 126 UCAS points
- Eligibility to work in the UK (no sponsorship)
- CV Submission – Submit your CV for review. We will assess your application against the entry criteria.
- Online Assessment – Complete a series of assessments to evaluate workplace approaches, preferred working styles, critical thinking, and numerical reasoning.
- Video Interview – Record responses to two interview questions given sufficient preparation time.
- Assessment Centre – Participate in in‑person assessments at a LOR office, including tasks, short interviews, and group activities.
- Outcome – We aim to provide feedback and communicate the outcome within two weeks of the assessment centre.
