Job Description:

We are looking for a candidate to join WSP’s Environmental Policy and Economics team based in Brussels, working globally with colleagues across the UK and Canada. The team provides robust, impartial and influential advice on policy development and strategic response across the full policy lifecycle, combining policy analysis with in-depth technical knowledge of environmental issues and science. We work across sectors including air quality, industrial emissions, water, circular economy, chemicals, climate change, safety and more.

A Little More About Your Role… The team collaborates across offices in Europe, North America and beyond. You will work to win and deliver new contracts with EU institutions and private sector bodies active in EU environmental policy.

Examples Of Recent Projects Delivered By The Team Include

  • Water:
    Fitness Check of the Water Framework Directive and Floods Directive; a study to support the impact assessment of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
  • Air quality and industrial emissions: supporting Defra with costs and benefits assessments; framework contract with the European Commission on industrial emissions; mapping and assessing local policies on air quality for the European Parliament.
  • Deforestation: evaluation of the EU Timber Regulation and EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Regulation; impact assessment for deforestation measures (EUDR).
  • Circular economy: regional, national and international studies on material recovery, recycling and packaging recyclability.
  • Chemicals: projects on EU chemicals legislation (fitness checks), REACH influence studies, PFAS risk management, and related socio-economic analysis.

Applications from those with European language skills in addition to English are welcome. Our team is based across the UK, Belgium, Germany and beyond, including Canada and the US. We are seeking to fill this role in Brussels, Belgium, with work across our network in Europe and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Engage with clients and stakeholders from public and private sectors; build and maintain relationships to identify new opportunities; win new environmental policy projects through proposals and presentations; represent WSP at EU policy forums, conferences and meetings.
  • Manage and/or direct a diverse range of environmental policy projects in areas such as water, air quality, chemicals, industrial emissions, waste, etc.; ensure projects are delivered efficiently, on time and within budget.
  • Provide expertise in environmental policy development and understand processes such as impact assessment and evaluation; mentor junior staff and foster professional development.
  • Collaborate to develop and implement long-term strategies for the environmental policy team; drive policy advancements using research, data-driven analysis and evidence-based recommendations.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate
  • Postgraduate qualification in environmental policy/science/technology, chemistry, economics, engineering or similar.
  • Professional experience in environmental or policy analysis; experience leading and delivering government policy evaluations and impact assessments; experience in consultancy, government, research, NGO or private sector settings.
  • Strong expertise in policy evaluation and impact assessment methodologies; ability to use data-driven approaches to inform decisions and policy recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to present findings and policy recommendations clearly in English.
Project Management Experience
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of environmental policy projects; ensure deadlines, quality and outcomes.
  • Experience in budgeting, resource allocation, client and subcontractor management, and project planning.
Strategy And Commercial Experience
  • Proven network of contacts within EU environmental policy and legislation.
  • Track record in winning new environmental policy projects and contracts, including proposal writing and client engagement.
  • Experience in developing and implementing the team’s environmental policy strategy to support growth.
Staff management
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to mentor and develop team members and foster a high-performing environment.
